La Liga giants Athletic Bilbao are set to launch a final assault on Real Madrid midfielder Asier Illarramendi, according to Marca.
Los Leones have made the former Real Sociedad star their number one priority in the January transfer window and they have until Friday, when the window closes in Spain, to find an agreement with the player.
Considering that their rivals for the midfielder’s signature Arsenal are ready to offer just €15 million as opposed to Athletic’s €25 million, chances are Real Madrid will be tempted to accept the proposal from San Mames.
However, while Illarramendi wouldn’t mind leaving Santiago Bernabeu in search of first team football, he has some doubts over joining Athletic.
Namely, he could miss out on a major windfall if he moves to San Mames, considering that his salary would reach €2.5 million in the last season of his contract with Real.
Also, with Illarramendi earning around €500,000 per year from his sponsorship agreement with Adidas, he would probably be forced to terminate the contract seeing as Athletic are sponsored by Nike.
