Bayern Munich captain Philipp Lahm hailed his side’s “perfect” performance as they brushed aside Barcelona 4-0 at the Allianz Arena on Tuesday.

Bayern’s defence and goalkeeper Manuel Neuer were never tested by a lacklustre Barca performance and the German side took advantage with four goals that leave their opponents with a mountain to climb in the second leg.

Lahm was not surprised by the margin of their victory and insisted it was the impressive defensive display from his side that should be praised, rather than focusing on Barcelona’s lack of quality.

“Of course I can comprehend what happened today,” he told reporters. “We have the potential to beat any team.

“It is a well-known fact that Barcelona have problems in the air.

“Our defensive performance was close to perfection; that was the key to our success.”

Spanish midfielder Javi Martinez was also quick to praise the effort put in by his side as they take a commanding lead to Camp Nou, but he was not convinced that it was their greatest performance of a record-breaking season.

“We’ve played a lot of good games this season so I’m not sure if this is the best,” he added.

“We knew how to play against Barcelona tonight.

“They had very few chances while we controlled the midfield and prevented them from moving the ball around. We took advantage of dead ball situations.”

Former Real Madrid winger Arjen Robben was in impressive form in the match as he was involved in the first three goals and he revealed his delight at securing a victory over such illustrious opposition.

“We played a perfect game,” he told ITV Sport. “[Barcelona] have dominated Europe for the last five years so to beat them like that, it makes you proud.

“But let’s remain quiet, we can enjoy the evening but there is another game to go.

“We fought for every metre, we didn’t give them any space to play, and they only had one or two chances all night.”
