Beckham craving MLS glory

David Beckham is eager to claim his first MLS Cup on Sunday in what could be his final game in the American top flight.

Beckham’s contract ends with LA Galaxy after they face Houston Dynamo, and as yet no decision has been made on his future.

The former Manchester United midfielder has already enjoyed title successes in England and Spain, and is looking to repeat that glory in the United States.

“I think wherever you play and whatever you do in your life you want to be successful,” Beckham said.

“I’ve been lucky enough throughout my career to be successful at Manchester United, I’ve been sucessful at Real Madrid.”

“I’ve seen the last two or three years – I’d say the last three years – we’ve had success in our franchise and in our club.”

Beckham has enjoyed a great post-season campaign, setting up all three of forward Mike Magee’s vital goals in the playoffs.

He is just one of a number of stars in the Galaxy line up, but one of them, captain Landon Donovan, has been quick to praise coach Bruce Arena’s contribution to the team’s success.

“The important piece to this is stability, and we’ve seen historically in our league that teams which have stable coaching staff, stable management and a core group of players together are the teams that do well,” Donovan said.

“Houston is clearly a team that’s indicative of that, (as were) New England for many years. And now we have that. (Real) Salt Lake and Seattle are building that, so I think that’s where it all starts and where Bruce (Arena) has been so valuable for us.”

Arena took over the side in 2008 and in just three years has transformed a team that conceded 62 goals in just 30 games to be the favourites for the MLS Cup.

And while many are tipping LA to claim the trophy at the Home Depot Centre, their opponents Houston have pedigree in the season-ending match, having won it in 2006 and 2007.
