Newell’s Old Boys drew first blood in their Copa Libertadores semi-final tie against Atletico Mineiro on Wednesday.
A two-goal second half from Newell’s saw the Argentine outfit record a dominant 2-0 win in game one of their two-legged meeting with the boys from Brazil.
After a goalless opening half, Gerardo Martino’s men finally found the back of the net just past the hour-mark.
Victor Figueroa played in Maxi Rodriguez and the former Liverpool midfielder made no mistake with the finish.
Newell’s had chances to double their lead but had to wait until the 81st minute before they could enjoy some breathing space.
Ignacio Scocco, who spent time in Greece with AEK Athens, placed the ball beyond Mineiro goalkeeper Victor with nine minutes remaining.
Newell’s will travel to Lourdes for the second leg on July 10.
