DC United put three unanswered goals past the Montreal Impact to open up a two-point lead at the top of the Eastern Conference in MLS.

A goal just before the interval from Chris Pontius and second-half strikes from Robbie Russell and Hamdi Salihi made sure United won for the fifth time in six matches.

The 3-0 win again puts United top of the east with 33 points, after New York Red Bulls’ draw against Toronto provisionally saw them move to the top of the standings.

David Beckham and Landon Donovan scored in Los Angeles Galaxy’s 4-3 loss to the San Jose Earthquakes.

The Earthquakes staged a staggering second-half fightback against the luckless Galaxy with goals from Victor Bernardez, Sam Cronin and MLS leading scorer Chris Wondolowski in the first 16 minutes of the second half turning the tide.

The win keeps San Jose on top of the Western Conference by four points from Real Salt Lake.

Toronto continued their resurgence under Paul Mariner, extending their unbeaten run to four with a 1-1 draw with the New York Red Bulls.

Two hasty goals belied what ended up being a low-key draw with Jan Gunnar Solli netting after some poor defending to put New York up 1-0 inside four minutes.

Two minutes later, the Red Bulls defence mimicked United’s poor marking for Danny Koevermans to rise unopposed and head home Torsten Frings’ corner.

Real Salt Lake lost their third game in a row to allow San Jose to move clear atop the Western Conference after a 2-0 defeat against Columbus Crew.

Midfielder Tony Tchani scored the first with a well-placed shot in the 16th minute before Eddie Gaven piled on the misery with the second two minutes before half-time.

Brian Ching converted a controversial penalty against the Philadelphia Union to secure a 2-1 win for Houston Dynamo.

Ching converted from the spot after going to ground under minimal contact from Union defender Gabriel Farfan.

New England Revolution snatched a 2-2 draw with the Seattle Sounders through Diego Fagunez’s goal four minutes into second-half additional time.

The Colorado Rapids bounced back after two straight losses with a 3-0 win over the Portland Timbers with goals from Jaime Castrillon, Conor Casey and Jamie Smith.
