Inzaghi linked with Wanderers move

Former Italy, AC Milan and Juventus striker Filippo Inzaghi could become the new Western Sydney Wanderers club’s inaugural marquee player.

The 38-year-old striker, who marked his final game for Milan in May by scoring the winning goal against Novara, has been offered to the A-League club.

Inzaghi’s Australian-based representative Lou Nesci revealed the veteran was keen to continue his playing career despite being offered a coaching role by Milan and said Australia could be the right fit.

“Filippo is certainly keen to come to Australia and the Wanderers would seem to be a good fit, especially with a sizeable Italian community in that part of Sydney,” Nesci told The World Game.

“I feel he would excite people in the west. He’s still scoring goals and still fit to play at a very high level despite his age.”

Nesci added he felt Inzaghi, who was previously in talks with Melbourne Heart, would have widespread appeal for the new Sydney club.

“I feel he would give Wanderers extra appeal in terms of putting bums on seats,” Nesci said.

“I realise some clubs might worry about his age after previous bad experiences with imports but I feel they should have no concerns on that score on this occasion.

“He has a curiosity to come to Australia and perform.”

Wanderers have confirmed seven signings for their inaugural season, and coach Tony Popovic had previously hinted at going without a marquee player.
