Robben surprised by comfortable Bayern victory at City

Arjen Robben is surprised by how comfortable Bayern Munich were in the side’s 3-1 win over Manchester City on Wednesday.

Goals from Robben, who became the first Bayern player to score in five consecutive UEFA Champions League matches, Franck Ribery and Thomas Muller secured the points for the German side in Group D following a dominant display.

While Alvaro Negredo pulled a goal back late on, Robben expected big-spending City to offer more of a test at the Etihad Stadium.

“Our performance in the first 70 minutes was superb. When things go your way like they did, it’s a lot of fun out on the pitch, especially against a quality team like Man City,” he said.

“We didn’t expect it to be as comfortable but that’s also a compliment to our team. City weren’t as organised defensively as we had expected and we used the space they offered us clinically.”

The win ensured Bayern set a club record of seven Champions League victories in a row as the defending champions sit top of their group with a 100 per cent record.

Captain Philipp Lahm hailed his team-mates’ performances, adding he was delighted with what he described as a “deserved” win.

“City has a great team, but we were well organized, started some great attacks and didn’t concede many chances,” he said.

“I think we were very good in the first 70 minutes. But against a quality side like City you can always concede a goal. It was a bit hectic for us after that, but over 90 minutes we absolutely deserved this victory.”
