Should Manchester United allow Dimitar Berbatov to leave?

Reports have been rife in the press in the last couple of days that Turkish club Galatasaray want to sign Manchester United striker Dimitar Berbatov in the January transfer window and the clubs president has now confirmed that club are interested in signing the 30 year-old.

Option

Gala President Unal Aysal told Hurriyet: “ We not just looking at Berbatov; we’re interested in a number of players,”

“Yes, we’re thinking of forwards, but now is far too early. We can only get in contact and decide at the end of December, when the time comes. We have four or five players in mind. But we can’t say that we want to buy any one player because we have not decided yet.”

Leaving

So the Turkish giants are interested in signing the Bulgarian striker. The question is should United allow him to leave the club. In these days of squad rotation he is another attacking option for Sir Alex Ferguson but he hasn’t really contributed much to the season so far.

The reason he hasn’t contributed much to the season so far is because he has spent most of the campaign on the sidelines or on the bench. Berbatov is currently fourth choice striker at United behind Wayne Rooney, Javier Hernandez and Danny Welbeck.

I’m sure its not exactly ideal for the striker but he seems to have carried on in a professional manner despite hardly playing in the Premier League.

Snubbed

According to reports the former-Bulgarian international nearly left Old Trafford in the summer after being completely left out of United’s squad to face Barcelona in last seasons Champions League final. This snub was strange due to the fact that Berbatov was United’s top scorer in the Premier League.

You could understand him being angry and upset over the snub and this season he hasn’t really been given a fair crack of the whip in the United starting line-up.

PSG

Galatasaray are not the only team to be linked with a move for Berbatov. Newly-rich French giants PSG have also been linked with a move for the striker. The club from the French capital were linked with a £20million move for Berbatov in the summer and could return with a solid bid in January.

Mixed

Berbatov seems to divide opinion amongst Manchester United fans. Some of them want him to stay and some can’t wait to see the back of him. Its strange for a player that played so well last season to be disliked by so many of his own fans.

Style

There is no doubting Berbatov’s technical ability. However his style is lethargic, almost bordering on lazy. I don’t think this endears him to the fans. And some United fans claim he doesn’t work hard enough for the team as a whole.

I think that’s a fair claim. He definitely doesn’t have the same work ethic of Wayne Rooney or Javier Hernandez. The style of United’s attacking play doesn’t suit Berbatov anymore. He’s not really a lightning-break kind of player.

Time

Dimitar Berbatov has never struck me as the sort of player that sticks around at a club for very long. He was at Tottenham for two years before joining United, where he has been for three years. Maybe its time for him to move on again.

If PSG came in with an offer of £20million then Manchester United would have to consider it. United are well stocked in the striking department and I’m sure Sir Alex Ferguson would find a way to use the money productively, maybe on a creative midfielder.

I can’t ever see Berbatov being a regular in the United first team again, not with the competition for places he now faces. Maybe a move would suit everybody involved. Berbatov gets a new lease of life that a move brings, his new club get a striker with a renewed hunger and United gets the money to strengthen their squad.

I believe that would be the best solution for everybody and I’m sure the thought has crossed Sir Alex Ferguson’s mind. Berbatov is out of favour and I think he could probably be out of the Old Trafford exit door come January.

Should Dimitar Berbatov leave Manchester United in January?

I think that Berbatov should be treated a lot better. I am not saying that Man Utd has given him bad, but if you have paid attention to how he played for Leverkusen or Tottenham u’ll see that there is a serious setback for Berbatov.
His place is not in a big team as Utd, due to the very good play of the youngsters. If he’s transfered to a “smaller” club it will be best for his carreer. He is a highly talented player, Tevez even left Utd because of the competition he faced from Berbarov..

He seems lazy because he’s that good. It takes a lot of work to be a team’s top goal scorer in a season. And he does have somewhere around a goal every other game for United ever since he joined us from Spurs. That’s not lazy, unless some United fans expected him to produce 1,284 goals in 1,363 matches, like how Pele did. haha. . .

Man u has lost his money in buying de gea.
He should hv bought, manuel neuer or leeds united goalkeeper,

Berbatov is a gud player, he ws z best goal scorer last, bt hw can u ignore hs talents, he was z 1 who hs brought man u on z top of z table, remember hs match against liverpool, blackburn, blackpool, he ws outstanding, i thnk its welbeck who mst b seated on bench, berbatov shud b given his chance 2 play, believe me he is a great player.

His quality should not be in question. If anything, his style of play perfectly suits a player that continues on into his late 30s. He’ll get a fair shot soon enough I believe. He brings a calmness up front that the two energetic youngsters would do well to implement into their game.

Kevin you make some valids points especially about him still being able to do a job at a number of clubs in world football.

He is a talented player and should be playing week-in week-out and in a team that suits his style of play.

It’s a long time rumour that is being carried over approaching the next transfer period of January. I defenitely agree with you that Berbatov’s future is elsewhere. He’s too talented to warm the bench weekn in and week out. He could easily be the front man for many clubs in the world and I think he will have a chance to move in January considering that the trio of youngster have a a higher work rate and potential for the future. Berbatov will maybe improve a little more, but he will have a hard time retaining his quality as he is in the 30’s now.
