´Bhoys´ have to grow up, says chastened Caldwell

Celtic's Gary Caldwell said lessons would have to be learned after the Scottish champions crashed out of Europe following a 2-1 defeat to Aalborg on Tuesday.

Celtic, who have now taken just one point from 18 away matches in the Champions League, needed a point to be in with a chance of being involved in European competition beyond Christmas.

But the loss means the Danish champions will take third place and the UEFA Cup spot in Group E with Manchester United and Villarreal qualifying for the last 16.

Scottish defender Caldwell, whose late own goal cruelly sealed the win for Aalborg, says his side hadn't been good enough in Europe this season.

“I think we should be better than Aalborg. I think we did enough at certain times but you have to be better than that away in Europe,” Caldwell said.

“You have to be able to see the game out when you are 1-0 up and they are going to throw everything at you.

“We weren't good enough on the night and we haven't been good enough in the campaign. We have to deal with that and we have to get better from it.”

Both Aalborg's goals came from deflected efforts from Celtic players completely against the run of play.

But the defender refused to blame this bad luck for his side's European exit and said Celtic would have to come back stronger next season if they were to qualify for the last 16 again.

“These things happen in football if you don't do the right thing – if you don't pass the ball well enough, keep the ball in their half and dictate the play when you're in front,” Caldwell said.

“We didn't do that and we let them back into a game they shouldn't really have been involved in.

“We have got to take a lot from this campaign and try and learn from it. We've been in the last 16 the last two years and we know how good it is.

“We want to be there but unfortunately this year we've paid the price for some sloppy performances. We will have to come back next year stronger.”

Celtic manager Gordon Strachan, in charge of his 25th European tie, will rue his side's missed chances as the Parkhead club's travel troubles continued.

Manchester United's goalless draw in Villareal means they both qualify for the last 16 with Aalborg claiming third spot.

Celtic had started brightly and Barry Robson gave them a well deserved lead.

But Aalborg struck back with a deflected goal from midfielder Caca and then a late own goal from Caldwell.

Celtic broke the deadlock in the 53rd minute through Robson.

The midfielder, who had missed a penalty when the two sides met at Parkhead, beat Martin Pedersen to a Mark Wilson cross from the left and fired a bullet header past the helpless Karim Zaza into the net.

Aalborg got back on level terms after 73 minutes.

Midfielder Caca unleashed a shot from 30 yards which took a wicked deflection off a Celtic player and looped over Artur Boruc and into the net.

Celtic's hearts were broken when Caldwell scored an own goal in the 88th minute. Andreas Johansson fired a cross in from the right which Glenn Loovens attempted to clear but it came off Caldwell and flew past Boruc.

Substitute Cillian Sheridan came close to connecting with a cross in the final minute but the Danish champions held on.

Countless transparent & mindlessly “predictable” rangers fan are “typing” & “talking” nonsense whilst Our Champions are “Competing” in Europe …. Celtic are the ONLY Team from Scotland to score a goal in Europe this Year, (2 in fact) The only Team to get as much as a Draw (Against Manchester United no less & Aalborg) …. Celtic have a long list of injuries & are a relatively Young Team, They lost last night due to lack of Experience, after claiming an Excellent Score-draw against Manchester United just a few Days ago …. A lack of numbers, “rustiness” & simple “bad luck” on the night went against Celtic after the hour mark, Celtic played “Without” a Left-back, with Mark Wilson filling-in admirably until He was found-out, Barry robson was used as a stand-in for Aiden McGeady & Gary Caldwell was a stand in for Paul Hartley/Mark Crosas, whilst Glen Loovens had His “1st” run-out in place of Gary, I could go on, eg Cillian Sheridan has Never set foot in the Champions League before & was a reservist until Last Month …. Our injuries meant We couldn’t bring on a “Fit” & Seasoned campaigner & from the 70th minute it Showed …. As for the “clone-like” perverse twisted characters in the pseudo-media Who lack objectivity & Taste & so mindlessly highlight what Celtic “haven’t” done, I’d draw the limited attention of Their backward mentality to The Fact that I’d HAPPILY lose “Away” in the “Champions” League, Year in , Year out, as long as We go through to the Last 16, “which We’ve done” for the last 2-Seasons-in-a-row “Whilst losing away” & had a chance to do so Again, Their “jealousy” Literally speaks volumes, Otherwise They’d be HIGHLIGHTING what Celtic “HAVE” Done, Get “The Picture” ?!?! …. The pseudo-revisionists/drooling closet rangers fans should be “Grateful” for Celtic ALONE Maintaining Scotland’s coefficient & Profile on the International Stage, instead of wittering on about away-day hoodoos & voodoo ad nauseam …. To “mindlessly” bang on about Celtic’s away performances going back over several “Years” in a Competition MOST of The Current Crop of Celtic Players have only played in ONCE or Twice is a perverse nonsense & a reflection of the idiotic nature of the unselfaware “typer” or “talker” …. I’ll let Them Type & witter-on Whilst We “Compete” with Other “Champions,” because We ARE The Champions Of Scotland for the Third & potentially Fourth Season in a Row …. Which is Why You’ll See Us AGAIN in The Champions League next Season & the Season after …. That’s ALL Our Champions & Sole Representatives of Scotland need, ie to be More “Seasoned,” as most of the Players on Show last night have only been at the Club for a Year …. I decided Before last night’s match, that if We didn’t make it into the last-16 then I “didn’t'” want to get into the UEFA cup, as it’s of No importance to Me & pales by comparison to The Champions League & more importantly it would put an unnecessary strain on Our already injury-ravaged squad, when BY FAR winning The League is more Important to Me & is “How” Celtic “Will” appear in The Champions League Again next Year, So They “WILL” Be IN Europe “After”Christmas …. Celtic managed to WIN The European Cup ie The Trophy You win if You get through the The Champions League group stages, so I WONDER HOW Celtic managed to Win That Trophy, (The 1st Team from Britain to Do so,) the ONLY Team from Scotland to have Done it, I wonder HOW that was Possible “IF” Celtic didn’t win “Away” in Europe, I wonder HOW was it Possible for The SAME Team, Who’s Champion’s League games are being “counted” by rabid rangers fans, were able to get to the UEFA cup Final (The 1st team from Scotland to do so) “IF” Celtic didn’t Win “Away” in Europe …. The lengths imbeciles will go to to “attempt” to twist “Reality” can best be seen in the perverse “denial” of the Burmese regime over the recent monsoon “&” in the Scottish media, Writ Large, a Media & Country which Should be “Grateful” that Celtic exist, otherwise They’d Literally have “NOTHING” & nothings to “type” about …. Our Bhoys didn’t do as WELL as They did last Year, but it’s HARD to Win Them ALL & “Sometimes the Better Team lose” as Happened for all to See last night …. I wouldn’t want to be in Craig Brewster’s shoes come the Weekend, because We’re going to See 1 almighty backlash at Celtic park from 11 Angry YOUNG Bhoys …. HAIL HAIL !!!! …. CHAMPIONEES !!!! CHAMPIONEES !!!! (x 3 going on 4)
