Argentina winger Jonas Gutierrez has joined Newcastle United, the English Premiership side announced Wednesday.
The midfielder, who celebrates his 25th birthday on Saturday, has arrived at the northeast side from Spanish club Real Mallorca on a five-year contract for an undisclosed fee.
Jonas, nicknamed 'Spiderman' for the mask he puts on for goal celebrations, is set to arrive at St James' Park later this month after a break following Argentina's goalless World Cup qualifier draw against Brazil on June 18.
Newcastle manager Kevin Keegan said: “Jonas is a wonderful signing for us.
“I know a lot of other clubs have been interested in him. He will be a terrific addition to the squad.
“He is an exciting player and I'm sure our fans will enjoy watching him,” the former England boss added.
Gutierrez, who had been linked with a move to Newcastle's Premier League rivals Portsmouth, said: “I cannot tell you how excited I am to be joining Newcastle United.
“The Premier League is a great place to play and I cannot wait to meet my new team-mates and prove myself to the Newcastle United fans.”
Gutierrez could make his first appearance for the Magpies in their pre-season friendly against PSV Eindhoven at St James' on August 6.
Newcastle finished twelfth in the 20-team Premier League last season.
