06-03-2010 Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Manchester United

Mick McCarthy’s Wolves take on the might of Manchesater United at just the wrong itme as the title race hots up.

Mick McCarthy will be quite happy with his seasons work so far, although Wolves are obviously far from safe. At the beginning of the season they were many people’s candidates for the drop but so far they have bucked that trend, despite a poor start to the season. Despite only being clear of the relegation zone by goal difference alone they can be encouranged that the highly unpredictable Wigan Athletic sit just a point above them, and below them lie Hull City and Burnley, two teams unlikely to pick up too many points between now and the end of the season. Obviously Wolves have a mountain to climb on saturday but they will have confidence that their fans will make Molineux a fortress when the visiting fans arrive. Injuries are few and far between, but they are missing the highly influential pair Iwelumo and Kightly.

Alex Ferguson loves this time of year and United historically drop very few points between Christmas and the end of the season. The race for the title has become an ever closer affair in recent weeks and Ferguson will be well aware that it is now gernuinely a three horse race, with Arsenal playing themselves into the mix. He will also bew aware that Arsene Wenger’s men have on  paper an easy tie to navigate at the weekend and it will be imperative for him to pick up a full complement of points. Some big names missing for united, with Giggs, Hargreaves, Anderson, Owen and O Shea all missing through injury, but Ferdinand is likely to be declared fit to play.

Wolves will be doing all they can to scrape some sort of result here, but I have to go for a convincing Man United win.

Verdict: Manchester United Away Win
