With the Premier League and Championship brought to a halt due to the international fixtures, England’s Football League really has the chance to take center stage this weekend. On that note, for those of you looking to stick on Saturday acca, we have found you a handful of helpful tips that are worth keeping an eye out for.
Saturday 10th October
BST 15:00 Lincoln City vs Bristol Rovers
Starting with Saturday’s hosts, putting in what was another impressive display while on EFL Trophy duties earlier in the week, it really has been a stellar start to the 2020/2021 campaign for Lincoln. Picking up a deserved 3-1 victory away at Mansfield on Tuesday night, the Imps have enjoyed a 100% start to the New Year and are one of just two sides along with Hull who can boast such a record. Skyrocketing their way to the top of the League One table and with the mood in their camp at a red-hot high, Michael Appleton’s men will also be boosted by what was a stunning last-gasp turnaround away at Blackpool last weekend. Coming from behind twice and bagging two strikes in the final three minutes, the one-time Portsmouth boss has also seen his side enjoy a real free-scoring run. Really bouncing back from their 7-2 defeat against defending Premier League champions Liverpool in the EFL Cup last month, fans around Lincolnshire should be confident of extending on their purple patch this weekend. On the flip side, while Lincoln might be enjoying a stellar start to the New Year, Bristol Rovers have really struggled to find any real momentum and have a reputation for their glaring issues on the road. Hit with a penalties defeat against Oxford in the EFL Trophy in midweek, the Pirates have failed to win any of their last four contests away from the Memorial Stadium so far this season, losing three of those outings. Even more worrying for the Gloucestershire outfit, they remarkably failed to win any of their final eight League One away fixtures before last year’s campaign was brought to an early finish.
Tip: Lincoln City win and over 1.5 goals @ 7/5
15:00 Southend United vs Exeter City
While Exeter might have been left heartbroken to have tasted even more play-off heartbreak over the summer, the Whites appear to have put that behind them and have impressed at the start of the New Year. Once again seen as one of the leading contenders to secure themselves another top-seven finish in England’s fourth-tier, Head Coach Matt Taylor has seen his side bounce back from their shock 2-0 defeat at the hands of Port Vale last month. Managing to avoid what would have been a stunning collapse while on EFL Trophy duties in midweek, an altered Exeter squad landed a dramatic 4-3 win away at Swindon and have enjoyed quite the free-scoring run. Last seen on League Two duties picking up a deserved 2-0 win against Cambridge at St James Park, Saturday’s guests have won each of their last three matchups across all formats and have bagged at least a pair of strikes in five of their last six appearances. Also now recording eight goals in just their last three contests on the road, there is no doubt that Exeter will be hugely confident of laying down a clinical marker this weekend. Slumping to a 3-0 hammering at home against Portsmouth on EFL Trophy duties in midweek, Southend are a club firmly at the heart of a crisis and many expect them to be hit with back-to-back relegation this season. Throwing away their League One status in woeful fashion during last year’s interrupted campaign, the Essex outfit have managed to land just a single point so far this season and have lost six of their seven competitive matchups.
Tip: Exeter City win and over 1.5 goals @ 11/8
15:00 Maidenhead United vs Hartlepool United
Starting with Saturday’s guests, while their late flurry earlier in the year might not have been enough to help them sneak a play-off finish during the interrupted 2019/2020 campaign, Hartlepool have marked their return in some style. While the National League’s future might have been in jeopardy, the Pools signed off their pre-season preparations with a 4-1 win against Gateshead and have certainly dragged that momentum into the New Year. Showing their resolve and coming from behind to grab two late goals away at Chesterfield on Tuesday night, Dave Challinor’s men have managed to open the new campaign with back-to-back wins and the mood in their camp does appear to be at a high. Signing off last year’s campaign by just losing a pair of their final 11 fifth-tier matchups, there is no doubt that Hartlepool will also be boosted by what is a rampant record against Saturday’s hosts. Desperate to end their three-year exile from the Football League this time around, Challinor’s side secured a 1-0 win when they last traveled to York Road and the Stags have won each of their last three straight meetings against Maidenhead. While Hartlepool might have opened the New Year with a real flurry, the same cannot be said for Alan Devonshire’s men. Watching National League debutants King’s Lynn Town grab a last-gasp winner in their 3-2 defeat on home soil in midweek, Maidenhead have opened the 2020/2021 campaign with back-to-back defeats and it should be noted that they have shipped over 2.5 goals in both of those losses.
Tip: Hartlepool United win @ 5/4
