With a hectic midweek schedule from across Britain, the EFL Cup and the Scottish Premiership will take center stage on Wednesday night. On that note, for those of you looking to stick on a midweek acca, we have found you a handful of helpful tips that are worth keeping an eye out for throughout Wednesday.
Saturday 16th September
BST 19:00 Ipswich Town vs Fulham
Starting with Wednesday’s guests, after being hit with a 3-0 drumming at the hands of Arsenal when making their Premier League return in West London over the weekend, Fulham will simply be desperate to pick up a morale-boost in midweek. Turning their attention to the EFL Cup after a huge step up in class on Saturday lunchtime, there is no doubt that Scott Parker will be desperate to give attacking talisman Aleksandar Mitrovic some much-needed game time. Having to settle for a place amongst the substitutes after finding the net for Serbia out in Russia while on international duties last week, the 25-year-old will undoubtedly play a crucial role in Fulham’s attempt to extend on their top-flight status. Expected to lead the line on Wednesday before the Cottagers travel to Leeds this weekend, the one-time Newcastle striker enjoyed another stunning campaign in the Championship last year. Bagging three goals in his final four regular-season contests, Mitrovic recorded 34 goals for club and country during the extended 2019/2020 campaign and also lifted the Championship’s Golden Boot in doing so. On the flip side, while Ipswich might have managed to open their League One account with three points against Wigan in East Anglia, the Blues should be in for a tricky step up in class on Wednesday. Blown away during their pre-season preparations thanks to 4-1 and 3-0 hammerings at the hands of West Ham and Tottenham, Mitrovic should be confident of opening his domestic account at Portman Road.
Tip: Aleksandar Mitrovic to score anytime @ 11/10
19:45 Leeds vs Hull City
While they might have failed to leave Anfield with something to show on Saturday evening, there is no doubt that Leeds laid down an early marker on their Premier League return. Almost causing what would have been a stunning upset on Merseyside, the Whites were on the wrong end of a last-gasp 4-3 defeat against defending champions Liverpool over the weekend, but certainly gained a string of admirers from across the country. Storming their way to the Championship title earlier in the summer after what was an eye-catching return from the enforced break, Head Coach Marcelo Bielsa will be glad to make a return to Elland Road in midweek. Last seen in West Yorkshire signing off the extended 2019/2020 campaign with a 4-0 romp against Charlton, the former Napoli boss saw his side remarkably land 22 points over their final eight second-tier contests on home soil. Landing a pair of 3-0 and 5-0 wins against Fulham and Stoke on that glittering purple patch, Leeds should be extremely confident of making an immediate return to winning ways on Wednesday night. Sacrificing their Championship status in comical fashion back in July, Hull are a side that still find themselves dealing with a string of issues. Despite marking their League One return with three points against Gillingham last weekend, the Tigers were last seen signing off their campaign with a 3-0 drumming at the hands of Cardiff and lost each of their final six Championship matchups on the spin. Hit with a 4-0 hammering when they last faced off against Leeds earlier in the year, we’re backing a similar outcome in midweek.
Tip: Leeds win by 2+ goals @ 11/10
19:45 St. Mirren vs Celtic
Starting with Wednesday’s guests, while Celtic might still be playing catchup after their off-field issues at the start of the new campaign, the Hoops have certainly bounced back from their European heartbreak in Glasgow last month. Putting in what was a thumping display last weekend and picking up a 5-0 romp away at Ross County, Neil Lennon’s men have won their last three Premiership matchups on the bounce and they have now collected 13 points from their opening five appearances. Hoping to put the pressure back on their Old Firm rivals in midweek, the defending Scottish champions have also managed to find some much-needed resolve at the back. While the likes of new signing Albian Ajeti and Odsonne Edouard might be continuing to shine in front of goal, Celtic have now recorded clean sheets in each of their last three victories and have gone over 300 minutes without picking the ball out of their own net. On the flip side, while the Hoops might be managing to find their feet, the same cannot be said for a St. Mirren side who are coming off the back of a season-worst display over the weekend. Hit with a 3-0 drumming at home against Hibernian last time out, Wednesday’s hosts have lost back-to-back Premiership contests, drawing a blank in both of those displays. In for what should be another long night in Paisley this week, it should also be noted that St. Mirren hold what is a dreadful record against the defending champions. Losing each of their last five straight meetings against Celtic by an aggregate score over 15-1, it’s hard to see anything other than a routine away victory in midweek.
