While the Premier League’s return may still be stealing the headlines across the footballing globe, the MLS is about to reach the business end of the season and the race to secure a play-off spot is starting to heat up. On that note, we here at Soccer News have found a handful of helpful tips that can boost your Sunday MLS acca:
Sunday 18th August
BST 01:00 Minnesota United vs Orlando City
Starting with Sunday’s hosts, coming off the back of another eye-catching defensive display in their 1-0 win over the Colorado Rapids in midweek, Minnesota have continued to enjoy a stellar run in the Western Conference. Along with having a US Open Cup Final to look forward to against defending MLS champions Atlanta later this month, Adrian Heath’s side sit second in the West and the mood in their camp is the highest it has been in recent memory. With a spot in the play-offs all but confirmed, Minnesota have lost just one of their last 13 domestic contests, a run that stems back to the 9th of June. A huge part of United’s eye-catching revival this year has come thanks to their continued defensive resolve. Sunday’s hosts have recorded three clean sheets in their last four contests and have kept four consecutive clean sheets at Allianz Field. As for Orlando, while the Purples may have picked up a hard-fought 1-0 win at home to a struggling Sporting KC on Thursday, they are still in the midst of a real struggle. Freefalling out of the top-seven in the Eastern Conference, Orlando have also now failed to record an away victory in their last four attempts. Also losing their last appearance at Allianz Field 1-0, we’re backing a similar result on Sunday.
Tip: Minnesota United win to nil @ 2/1
02:00 Houston Dynamo vs Colorado Rapids
Starting with Sunday’s guests, although Colorado may have suffered a close-fought 1-0 defeat away at a high-flying Minnesota United last weekend, the mood in Conor Casey’s camp should still be on a high. Looking to mount a late charge up the Western Conference, the Rapids did impress in their back-to-back victories over San Jose and Montreal earlier in the month. One man who has really started to shine in the second half of the season is the in-form, Diego Rubio. Now finding the net in three of his last four MLS appearances, the 26-year-old also has six in his last nine and has been by far Colorado’s standout performer this year. Given Houston’s continued issues, particularly defensively, Rubio should be confident of extending his tally this weekend. Slumping to yet another defeat in their 2-1 loss away at Philadelphia last time out, the Dynamo’s have lost their last five contests on the bounce and have freefallen away from the play-off spots in the West. Also recording just a single clean sheet since the 29th of April, we’re backing a free-scoring Rubio to extend his goalscoring run on Sunday.
Tip: Diego Rubio to score anytime @ 12/5
03:00 LA Galaxy vs Seattle Sounders
Although a three-match losing run entering August may have had many in California starting to panic, LA Galaxy appeared to have bounced back with their 2-0 win over Dallas in midweek. Now with their sights firmly set on securing a play-off spot in the Western Conference, Head Coach Guillermo Barros Schelotto will be most impressed by his sides’ recent performances on home soil. Securing back-to-back wins at Dignity Health Sports Park, including a dramatic 3-2 win over runaway league leaders LAFC, one man to watch on Sunday will be attacking talisman, Zlatan Ibrahimovic. Bagging a brace against Dallas on Thursday, the 37-year-old has now scored seven goals in his last six outings, including five goals in his last two matches in California. With Seattle so publically struggling in the second half of the season, Ibrahimovic and co should be confident of enjoying another fruitful morning in the final third. Suffering a 3-0 hammering away at Real Salt Lake in midweek, the Sounders have shipped a trio of goals in each of their last three appearances and have recorded just one win since the middle of June.
Tip: LA Galaxy to score over 1.5 goals @ 8/13
