19th August: Wednesday’s Football Accumulator – 10/1

With the Champions League once again taking center stage in midweek, Wednesday offers us a string of noteworthy meetings from across the footballing globe. On that note, for those of you looking to stick a midweek acca on, we have found you a handful of helpful tips that are worth keeping an eye out for.

Wednesday 19th August

BST 10:30 Western United vs Melbourne City

Starting with Western United, after backing the Green and Blacks last week, it has been nothing short of a stunning end to the year for undoubtedly the A-League’s in-form side. While they might have left it too late to secure an AFC Champions League spot, Mark Rudan’s men once again impressed as they picked up a deserved 2-1 victory against runaway leaders Sydney FC and have already secured a top-six finish with time to spare. Now in the midst of a three-match winning run and also collecting a stunning 18 points over their last seven appearances, the mood in their camp only continues to skyrocket and they have one leading marksman enjoying a real purple patch. Bagging at least a pair of strikes in each of their previous six victories, one man to keep an eye out for will be the red-hot Besart Berisha. Once again finding the net against Sydney last time out, the 35-year-old has found the net in his last three contests on the bounce, recording four A-League goals on that run. Even more impressive, the one-time Burnley striker has now recorded eight goals in his last seven appearances and will be looking to sign off his individual campaign with yet another strike in midweek. On the flip side, while Melbourne City might have secured another top-two finish this summer and have lost just one of their last seven A-League outings, they have shown some recent issues at the back. Throwing away a two-goal lead against Adelaide last time out and having to settle for a point, the Sky Blues have conceded at least a pair of strikes in six of their last eight matchups across all competitions.

Tip: Besart Berisha to score anytime & Both teams to score @ 13/8

20:00 Lyon vs Bayern Munich

Laying down the most clinical of markers over the weekend and putting eight past Barcelona out in Portugal, Bayern Munich made a piece of Champions League history that will live long in the memory. Now rightfully seen as a landslide pick with many to lift the title later in the month, the German giants have only gone from strength to strength since the restart and some have even billed them as the best Bayern side over recent decades. Completing a domestic silverware sweep this season and now in the midst of a stunning 19-match winning run across all competitions, it is no surprise that the Bavarians have a much-feared reputation for their lethal displays in front of goal. Picking up an 8-2 hammering against Barca and also blowing Chelsea away in the quarter-finals thanks to a 7-1 aggregate romp, one man to potential keep an eye out for in midweek will be former Arsenal starlet, Serge Gnabry. While leading marksman Robert Lewandowksi might be tearing up the record books this season, the German international has enjoyed his own standout campaign at the Allianz. Once again finding the net against Barcelona over the weekend, the 25-year-old has recorded four Champions League goals in as many appearances, including a brace at Stamford Bridge prior to the break. Also making the most shocking of statements on Saturday night, few expected what turned out to be a famous night for Lyon. Along with knocking out Juventus thanks to away goals earlier in the month, the French outfit managed to pick up a stunning 3-1 victory against Manchester City last time out, a result that sent shockwaves across Europe. However, still praying for another miracle out in Portugal, it should be noted that Rudi Garcia’s side have lost each of their last three meetings against the German heavyweights and their adventure might be drawing to a close. While the Whites might find the mood in their camp at a red-hot high, we’re backing a glittering Bayern to have too much firepower in Wednesday’s semi-final.

Tip: Serge Gnabry to score anytime @ 27/25

23:15 Flamengo vs Grêmio

Starting with Wednesday’s hosts, while the back-to-back Serie A champions might have opened the new campaign seen as a real contender to reclaim their title this season, it has been a tricky start for Flamengo. Despite managing to end their duck and pick up what was a hard-fought 1-0 win away at Coritiba last time out, Domènec Torrent’s men did open up the New Year with worrying back-to-back defeats against Atlético GO and Atlético Mineiro. Desperate to refind a similar level that helped them storm to their sixth domestic crown last season, the former Manchester City coach will have a growing headache over his side’s rather worrying issues in front of goal. Managing to record just a single goal in any of their opening three Serie A appearances this summer, Wednesday’s hosts have managed to bag just a pair of strikes in almost 400 minutes of action across all competitions. On the flip side, while Flamengo might be struggling to find their feet this summer, Grêmio are unbeaten in any of their opening three Serie A contests and also gained plenty of plaudits for their exploits in the Carioca 1. With another Copa Libertadores finish at the top of their agenda, Renato Portaluppi’s men are in the midst of a 13-match unbeaten run across all formats and have a real reputation for their performances at the back. Recording another clean sheet last time out, the midweek guests have conceded just a single goal in any of their previous four appearances. You might also be interested to know, with six of the last eight matchups between the two sides seeing under 2.5 goals by the final whistle, we’re backing what should be another cagey encounter at the Maracanã on Wednesday night.
