1st January: New Year’s Day Accumulator – 8/1

With a lively New Year’s Day from across all of England’s footballing tiers, we here at Soccer News have found a handful of helpful tips to open your 2020 acca:

Wednesday 1st January

BST 15:00 AFC Wimbledon vs Southend United

Starting with Wednesday’s hosts, while on paper it might say that AFC Wimbledon have lost two of their last three League One matchups, that does not tell the full story. Putting in a rugged display in their 2-1 defeat against play-off contenders Oxford over the weekend, the mood around Surrey appears to be on the rise and Glyn Hodges’ men are enjoying one of their brightest runs of the season. Likely to still be boosted after snatching three points off of another top-six contender in Bristol Rovers on Boxing Day, the Wombles have found a route out of the drop zone and have continued to shine on home soil. Winning four of their last six League One matchups in front of their own supporters and tasting defeat just once at Kingsmeadow since the 21st of September, there is no doubt that Hodges’ side should be relishing Southend’s arrival to Surrey in midweek. Despite turning to former England defender Sol Campbell in an attempt to steady the ship, the Essex outfit are still firmly at the heart of a crisis. Despite playing out a 2-2 draw against fellow relegation scrappers MK Dons over the weekend, the Shrimpers still sit 13 points adrift of safety and are enduring a woeful 14-match winless run in England’s third-tier.

Tip: AFC Wimbledon win @ 19/20

15:00 Grimsby vs Salford

Bouncing back after a torrid start to December, Salford appear to be refinding their form at what could be a crucial time. Arguably the most notable outfit in England’s fourth-tier, Head Coach Graham Alexander saw his side once again catch the eye with a thumping 4-1 win away at Oldham over the weekend. With their illustrious owners demanding yet another play-off charge in their debut Football League campaign, the Reds are enjoying a three-match unbeaten run and find themselves sat six points adrift of the top-seven opening the New Year. However, also making a statement by picking up a 3-1 win against third-place Crewe on Boxing Day, one starlet who has continued to enjoy a purple patch of late is 21-year-old Brandon Thomas-Asante. Bagging a brace against Oldham over the weekend, the forward has found the net in back-to-back appearances and Salford should be optimistic about their trip to Blundell Park in midweek. Still on a torrid run of form at the end of 2019, Grimsby still find themselves rapidly falling down the League Two standings. On a remarkable run that has seen them fail to win any of their last 15 matches across all competitions, a run that stems back to the end of September, it should also be noted that Salford picked up a 1-0 victory when they met earlier in the season.

Tip: Salford draw no bet @ 1/1

20:00 Arsenal vs Manchester United

Bouncing back in some style to clinch a deserved 2-0 win at Turf Moor over the weekend, Manchester United have now landed back-to-back victories since their Vicarage Road disaster. Now within touching distance of reclaiming a spot in the top-four, one man who has continued to shine of late is forward, Anthony Martial. Finding the net against Burnley on Saturday, the Frenchman is enjoying a real purple patch at Old Trafford and has now bagged three goals in his last two Premier League appearances. Even more impressive, Martial has scored more Premier League goals (41) and had more goal involvements (61) than any other Manchester United player since his debut in September 2015. While Arsenal might have made a string of improvements since appointing former skipper Mikel Arteta a fortnight ago, the Gunners are still in the midst of a crisis and dealing with some glaring issues at the back. Opening the New Year sat outside the top half of the table and suffering a 2-1 defeat at home against Chelsea over the weekend, Wednesday’s hosts have won just one of their last 15 matches across all competitions. Even more worrying, the Gunners have lost their last four straight matches in North London, shipping two or more goals in each of those defeats.

Tip: Anthony Martial to score anytime @ 6/4
