It was Liverpool’s SAS partnership that dominated the Premier League scoring charts last season, with magnificent Luis Suarez finishing the campaign as top scorer with 31 goals in 33 fixtures. Seeing as how the Uruguayan has since moved to Spanish La Liga, it will be up to usual suspects Daniel Sturridge, Sergio Aguero, Robin van Persie and Wayne Rooney as well as new boy Diego Costa to decide on Luis Suarez’s successor.
Wayne Rooney (Manchester United)
Market: Rooney to finish as Top Goalscorer
Odds: 9/1 @ bet365
With Robin van Persie missing a big chunk of the previous league campaign, Wayne Rooney was United’s top scorer last term, netting 17 goals despite not being deployed as an out-and-out striker, and chances are the new Red Devils captain can hope for a similar return this season as well. This time he will be playing a bit closer to the opposition goal, but considering the obvious lack of creativity in midfield, the England star will again have to act as a playmaker at times and that is one of the reasons why I doubt he can finish top of the goalscoring charts.
Robin van Persie (Manchester United)
Market: Van Persie to finish as Top Goalscorer
Odds: 13/2 @ bet365
Robin van Persie won the award in his first season upon arriving from Arsenal, scoring 26 goals to help Manchester United win the Premiership title, but a lot has changed since. The Red Devils are no longer serious title contenders and again look set to finish outside the top 4, while the Dutchman has been plagued with numerous injuries since and is forced to miss the start of the season due to the lack of match fitness. RVP now looks to be past his prime and I cannot see him finishing as top team goalscorer let alone top league marksman.
Diego Costa (Chelsea)
Market: Costa to finish as Top Goalscorer
Odds: 11/2 @ bet365
Chelsea’s one of two marquee signings this summer is one of the reasons the Blues have been made number one favourites for the Premiership title and his style of play as well as impressive physique are enough to suggest the Spain international should quickly adapt to the new competition. Chances are his debut season in England will prove to be a success, but with Chelsea hardly one of the league’s most entertaining sides, Costa cannot be expected to repeat the numbers from last season when he bagged 27 league goals for Atletico Madrid.
Sergio Aguero (Manchester City)
Market: Aguero to finish as Top Goalscorer
Odds: 5/1 @ bet365
Similar to Robin van Persie, the Argentina star has seen a number of niggling injuries prevent him from showing all he’s got and that is the main reason why Aguero is unlikely to realise his full potential this term. The 26-year-old is already behind on fitness having taken part at the 2014 World Cup and with his track record, an injury-free season seems like a mission impossible. Having said that, Aguero is likely to again score some important goals for City, like he does every season, but his record of 23 Premier League goals in a single campaign is unlikely to be beaten.
Daniel Sturridge (Liverpool)
Market: Sturridge to finish as Top Goalscorer
Odds: 5/1 @ bet365
Daniel Sturridge came second behind teammate Luis Suarez by notching 21 goals in mere 29 league fixtures and no doubt he is the number one favourite for the coveted title this season. The England international has matured a great deal at Anfield and having been scoring goals on regular basis for a year and a half now, he can be trusted to continue his goalscoring form. Sturridge has some impressive creative players behind him, while he can also carve out chances on his own, so I see a good value in backing the England starlet to finish as Premier League top goalscorer.
