Premier League giants Manchester City can consider themselves to be quite unfortunate having been placed in the so-called group of their for the fourth time in last five years, but the difference is they look capable of overcoming all the obstacles. It goes without saying that Juventus, Sevilla and Borussia M’gladbach will also be hoping to make it to the knockout stages, but since only two of these sides can qualify for the next phase, we are bound to see home highly entertaining yet nervy affairs throughout the Group D campaign.

While they have won two of last four Premier League title and have emerged as main candidates to make it three out of five, Manchester City cannot seem to catch a break in Europe’s elite competition. But, despite being placed in arguably the strongest group, the high-flying Citizens have no reason to fear the other three teams as they are currently head and shoulders above the rest and finally have some experience of playing at this level. Winning the first place in Group D will be no easy task, but we trust Manuel Pellegrini’s men to deliver this time out.

The fight for second place in the group should go to the wire, with all three sides having reason for optimism, but we believe that Juventus’ huge experience will eventually prove the difference. Both the Bianconeri and Sevilla have seen major changes in their playing squads and have been far from impressive in the opening exchanges, but while the Old Lady reached Champions League final last time out, los Rojiblancos could find it hard to make the step up having last played in the competition some five years ago.

Similar to what Chelsea did last summer, Manchester City did not make too many signings during close season, but they simply reinforced the weak spots in the squad, and that has been the main reason behind the excellent start to the season. Having eased off to wins against the Blues and Everton, among others, the Citizens have shown a great deal of quality and character, and this feels like the season when they can finally reach the final stages of the Champions League, so they definitely look a good bet to win their opening game against Juventus, a team that are still trying to recover from the loss of Carlos Tevez and Andrea Pirlo.

Borussia M’gladbach have finally made it to the Champions League group stage, but they were incredibly unfortunate to be placed in such a strong group. The lack of experience could prove to be a problem for die Fohlen, and they could find it hard to withstand the incredible pressure from Sevilla front line in their opening match at Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan. Los Rojiblancos may still be a team in the making, but they have beaten much stronger sides at their home venue and everything suggests Borussia M’gladbach will take the fall as well.
