The 2016 Copa America Centenario is a showpiece tournament that will see the best sides from South America and the CONCACAF zone fight for the coveted trophy between 3 and 26 June in the United States.
We have already reviewed the national teams most likely to be involved in the title chase and it is now time to take a look at the main candidates for the Golden Boot award, which was shared between Eduardo Vargas and Paolo Guerrero last year.
Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi leads the betting as many believe he will finally shine at a major international competition and help Argentina end a 23-year wait for a major title.
The highly rated forward has suffered a back injury in the friendly match vs Honduras, but he is expected to be fit for the tournament finals and stands a good chance of winning the Golden Boot.
With Argentina the main favourites, it is not surprising that Sergio Aguero and Gonzalo Higuain are ranked second and third in the Copa America top goalscorer market, but it does not seem wise to bet on either of the two strikers considering that they will probably be sharing the playing time in the United States.
Messi’s teammate Luis Suarez was expected to shine for Uruguay, but he in turn suffered a hamstring problem and is almost certain to miss at least a couple of games, meaning there is no point in backing the La Celeste star this time out.
Chile star Alexis Sanchez is also in the mix, especially now that his usual strike partner Eduardo Vargas has been left out, and with La Roja heading to the United States as reigning champions, the Arsenal forward should be there or thereabouts come 26 June.
Uruguay striker Edinson Cavani, Brazil forwards Hulk and Jonas, as well as Colombia striker Carlos Bacca all harbour top scorer ambitions, but, taking everything into account, Lionel Messi is probably your best bet for the Golden Boot award.
