With English football now fully back in the swing of things, Tuesday promises to offer another exciting night from across the footballing tiers. On that note, we here at Soccer News have found a handful of helpful tips that can boost your midweek acca:
Tuesday 20th August
BST 19:45 Sheffield Wednesday vs Luton Town
Starting with Tuesday’s hosts, although the Owls may have suffered a surprise 1-0 loss away at Millwall over the weekend, new Head Coach and former Sheffield Wednesday defender Lee Bullen has plenty of positives to take away after a bright summer. Picking up back-to-back opening victories at the start of the new Championship campaign thanks to a 2-0 win over Barnsley and a 3-2 win over Reading, fans around Hillsborough are dreaming of a play-off charge this year. Including snatching an impressive 2-2 draw against La Liga outfit Villereal in their final pre-season appearance, a huge part of Wednesday’s recent resurge has come thanks to their form on home soil. Tuesday’s hosts have won three of their last four Championship matches at Hillsborough, scoring two or more goals in each of those victories. Given Luton’s sluggish return to the second-tier, the Owls should be confident of refinding their winning form in midweek. Suffering a 2-1 defeat at home to West Brom last weekend and still looking for their first Championship win of the season, the Haters are also coming off the back of back-to-back Championship defeats and have shipped two or more goals in each of those appearances.
Tip: Sheffield Wednesday to score over 1.5 goals @ 5/6
19:45 Gillingham vs Blackpool
Starting with Tuesday’s guests, although many around Bloomfield Road would have been optimistic about Blackpool’s chances of pulling off a play-off charge this season, few would have expected their stellar start. Despite crashing out of the League Cup at the hands of Cambridge last week, the Oranges have won each of their opening three League One appearances and once again caught the eye in their 2-1 win over Oxford on Saturday. With the mood in their camp the highest it has been in recent memory, former Leeds boss Simon Grayson has also seen his side bag two or more goals in each of those victories, including a 3-1 win away at Southend earlier in the month. Handed the chance to leapfrog Lincoln to top spot in the third-tier, Blackpool should see Tuesday’s trip to Gillingham as a real opportunity to make it four wins out of four. Crashing out of the League Cup at the hands of League Two outfit Newport last week, Steve Evans’ side are still looking for their first win in any competition this season and have failed to win any of their last seven matchups. It is also worth noting that Blackpool hold a very impressive record in their previous trips to Priestfield. Tuesday’s guests have won each of their last two matches in Kent and we’re backing a similar result in midweek.
Tip: Blackpool win @ 8/5
19:45 Mansfield vs Leyton Orient
Although many at Mansfield were growing concerned by the Stags’ sluggish start to the new season following on from an inconsistent summer, they did appear to bounce back with a 2-0 win away at Carlisle over the weekend. Looking to go one step further than their play-off semi-final exit last year, Head Coach John Dempster will be most excited by his sides form in the final third. Despite picking up just a single victory in any of their opening four matches across all competitions, they have scored a pair of goals in each of their opening three League Two appearances. One man who will be given the responsibility of spearheading Mansfield’s promotion charge this season will be leading marksman, Danny Rose. Once again finding the net against Carlisle last weekend, the 25-year-old has three in three and is averaging a goal every 80 minutes. Given Leyton Orient’s recent issues since making their Football League return, particularly on the road, Rose should be confident of extending his eye-catching start to the season. Crashing out of the League Cup thanks to a 2-0 defeat away at Plymouth last week, new boss Ross Embleton has seen his side fail to win any of their last three contests, including a 3-1 defeat away at Macclesfield earlier in the month.
Tip: Danny Rose to score anytime @ 6/4
