With Ligue 1 making its return to action this weekend, we are offered a string of interesting meetings from across the continent. On that note, for those of you looking to open Saturday with an acca, we have found a handful of helpful tips that are worth keeping an eye out for.
Saturday 22nd August
BST 14:00 Bohemians vs St. Patrick’s Athletic
Starting with Saturday’s hosts, continuing on what has been a stunning run of form either side of football’s enforced break, Bohemians know that three points this weekend will see them move within touching distance of top spot. With another European finish at the top of their agenda and landing a deserved 1-0 win away at Finn Harps last time out, Keith Long’s men have now won their last four Premier Division contests on the bounce and have continued to gain a string of praise for their continued performances at the back. Collecting 18 points over their last seven top-flight contests and still boosted by what was a shock 2-1 win against defending champions Dundalk earlier in the month, Bohemians have conceded just a single goal on their recent four-match winning run and will also be looking to extend on their recent success on home soil. Including that victory over Dundalk last time out at Dalymount Park, Long’s side have won their last three straight contests in Dublin. On the flip side, While St. Patrick’s might have managed to snatch a hard-fought point off of Shamrock last weekend, Saturday’s guests have managed to win just one of their previous five Premier Division appearances and have also collected just a single point over their last three matchups on the road. Hit with a 3-0 drumming the last time they made the trip to Dalymount Park and losing their last three straight matchups in Dublin, we’re backing a similar outcome this weekend.
Tip: Bohemians win @ 5/4
15:00 Rangers vs Kilmarnock
While Rangers might have managed to extend on their unbeaten start to the new Premiership campaign with a 0-0 draw away at Livingston last time out, there is no doubt that the Blues will be looking to make a return to winning ways on Saturday afternoon. Still able to build a buffer over Old Firm rivals Celtic due to their off-field issues earlier in the month, Head Coach Steven Gerrard has seen his men collect 10 points over their opening four appearances and many have them tipped as a real title challenger this season. Likely to still be boosted by their back-to-back 3-0 romp against St. Mirren and St. Johnstone, the former England midfielder will be most impressed by his side’s continued resolve at the back. Along with managing to keep hold of attacking talisman Alfredo Morelos this summer, Rangers are yet to concede a single Premiership goal since opening the 2020/2021 campaign and will be looking to make another statement at Ibrox this weekend. Losing just a single top-flight contest in Glasgow since way back in September of last year, it should also be noted that Saturday’s hosts have not lost a matchup against Kilmarnock at Ibrox since 2012. Throwing away two goals in the final five minutes and hit with an incredibly worrying 2-1 defeat at home against St. Johnstone last weekend, new boss Alex Dyer knows that he has quite the rebuilding job on his hands at Rugby Park. Showing many of the issues that haunted them before last year’s campaign was brought to an early halt, Killie have failed to win any of their opening four appearances and are now without a win in any of their last eight top-flight contests carrying on from last year.
Tip: Rangers win and under 3.5 goals @ 20/21
20:00 Lille vs Rennes
Starting with Saturday’s hosts, while Lille might have opened this weekend’s Ligue 1 campaign with a 2-1 defeat against Dutch outfit AZ Alkmaar earlier in the month, Les Dogues had enjoyed a very eye-catching end to the year before the 2019 campaign was brought to an early halt. Missing out on a Champions League return by just a single point, Christophe Galtier’s men were last seen on top-flight duties landing what was an impressive 1-0 win against Champions League semi-finalists Lyon. Really finding their feet under the one-time Saint-Etienne boss, Lille were previously in the midst of a three-match Ligue 1 winning run and had also managed to land a remarkable 18 points over their final seven domestic appearances. Landing back-to-back victories at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy before football’s enforced break and with a top-four finish at the top of their agenda, Galtier’s side will be looking to make an early statement this weekend. On the flip side, enjoying what was a record-breaking campaign at Roazhon Park, Rennes really cemented their spot as French football’s dark horses last season and have managed to secure a maiden campaign in the Champions League. Last seen on Ligue 1 duties putting in another remarkable display and securing a 5-0 romp against Montpellier back in March, Saturday’s guests were also in the midst of a three-match winning run and the confidence in their camp was at a red-hot high. In a matchup that should produce a string of opportunities, it should also be noted that six of the last seven meetings between Lille and Rennes have seen both teams find the net by the final whistle.
Tip: Both teams to score @ 19/20
