With the Championship drawing to a close on Wednesday, we are offered a stacked midweek schedule from across the continent. On that note, for those of you looking to stick on a midweek acca, we have found you a few helpful tips that are worth keeping an eye out for.
Wednesday 22nd July
BST 18:00 Manchester United vs West Ham
Starting with Wednesday’s hosts, hit with a 3-1 drumming against Chelsea in Sunday’s FA Cup semi-final at Wembley, Manchester United will be desperate to make an immediate response. They now find only their goal difference keeping them behind Leicester and the lucrative final Champions League spot. Watching their unbeaten run come to an abrupt end over the weekend, the former champions have recently begun to show some issues at the back. While the likes of Bruno Fernandes and Anthony Martial might be continuing to shine in front of goal, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side watched Southampton snatch a dramatic injury-time equalizer in what could turn out to be a crucial 2-2 draw at Old Trafford last week. Also shipping a pair of goals against relegation scrappers Bournemouth in a stunning 5-2 win earlier in the month, we could be in for another lively contest in Manchester this week. Putting on a first half clinic in what appears to be a crucial 3-1 win against Watford on Friday night, West Ham have all but confirmed their Premier League status for another year. With the red-hot Michail Antonio now bagging seven goals since returning from the enforced break, the Hammers have collected 10 points over their last five contests and have really started to shine in the final third. With seven of the last 10 meetings between the two sides seeing both teams find the net by full-time, we’re backing a similar outcome in midweek.
Tip: Both teams to score @ 19/20
19:30 Leeds United vs Charlton Athletic
Keeping up the party atmosphere with a 3-1 romp away at Derby over the weekend, the mood in Leeds’ camp couldn’t be any higher. Already claiming the Championship title with time to spare and ending their Premier League exile, Marcelo Bielsa’s side have only gone from strength to strength at the back end of the campaign. Winning their last five second-tier contests on the bounce and looking to end their year with another statement, the Whites have also really started to shine in the final third. Including a thumping 5-0 romp against Stoke at Elland Road earlier in the month, Wednesday’s hosts have scored 13 goals in their five July contests. One man you should certainly keep an eye out for in midweek is the red-hot Pablo Hernandez. Putting in a Man of the Match display at Pride Park on Sunday and arguably Leeds’ standout performer this season, the 35-year-old has recorded three goals in his last four Championship appearances and should be confident of extending on his tally this week. While Charlton might have managed to snatch a dramatic late equalizer in a 2-2 draw against Wigan over the weekend, the Reds have failed to win any of their last six Championship contests and only their goal difference is keeping them outside the drop zone. Holding the third-worst away day record in England’s second-tier, Lee Bowey’s side could be in for a tough test on their season finale.
Tip: Pablo Hernandez to score anytime @ 2/1
20:45 Sampdoria vs Genoa
Starting with Wednesday’s hosts, putting on what was a stunning second half display away at Parma over the weekend, Sampdoria have continued to shock many with their recent purple patch. Coming from two goals down to snatch the most dramatic of 3-2 wins on their travels, I Blucerchiati have won their last three Serie A matchups on the bounce and have collected 15 points over their last six top-flight appearances. With the red-hot Federico Bonazzoli now bagging five four goals in just his last three matchups, there is no doubt that former Leicester boss Claudio Ranieri will be hugely excited by his side’s scintillating performances in the final third. Enjoying comfortably their brightest run of the season so far, Sampdoria have now scored a trio of strikes in each of their last three Serie A victories. Laning back-to-back 3-0 romps against SPAL and Cagliari in their last two showings on home soil, the mood in Ranieri’s camp is at a real high. While Genoa may have managed to pick up what was a crucial 2-1 victory against fellow scrappers Leece in a real six-pointer, Wednesday’s guests have shown some continued issues at the back throughout the year. Hit with a 3-0 drumming against a struggling Torino in their last contest on the road, the Red and Blues have shipped at least a pair of goals in their last three straight matchups away from the Stadio Luigi Ferraris.
Tip: Sampdoria to score over 1.5 goals @ 5/4
