With all of Europe’s top-tiers fully back in the swing of things, Saturday promises to offer another stacked schedule from across the footballing globe. On that note, for those of you looking to stick on a weekend acca, we have found a handful of helpful tips that are worth keeping an eye out for.
Saturday September 25th
BST 15:00 Leyton Orient vs Mansfield Town
Starting with Saturday’s hosts, while Leyton Orient might have missed out on a play-off spot last season, they have really caught the eye since opening the 2021/22 campaign. With their sights set on mounting a real automatic charge this time around, Head Coach Kenny Jackett finds the mood in his camp at a real high. Enjoying an immediate boost since bringing in the former Portsmouth boss, the O’s were last seen seven days ago when laying down another marker. Opening this weekend’s fixtures sat as high as second in the League Two standings, the Reds breezed their way to a 3-1 win away at Bristol Rovers. Really bouncing back after what was a stuttering start to the new season, Orient are now unbeaten in each of their last five matchups across all formats, collecting four wins. Smelling what is a real chance to extend on their purple patch on Saturday afternoon, Jackett’s side have also won their last three competitive contests, bagging themselves eight goals. With their stellar run highlighted by a 4-0 win against Oldham Athletic earlier in the month, a downbeat Mansfield should face another stern test here. Despite snatching a 1-1 draw off of Rochdale on home soil last weekend, the Stags are in the midst of a nightmare run of form. Remarkably, Nigel Clough’s side have collected just a single point from any of their last five straight League Two matchups. Likewise, continuing on from last season, it should also be noted that Mansfield have won just a pair of their last 14 straight fourth-tier fixtures on the road.
Tip: Leyton Orient win @ 5/4
15:00 Maidenhead United vs Grimsby Town
While Grimsby might have lost their Football League status over the summer after a woeful campaign in Lincolnshire, it appears that the Mariners are enjoying a new lease of life. Dropping back down to the National League and with their sights firmly set on making an immediate fourth-tier return, the decision to stick with Head Coach Paul Hurst appears to be paying off. Opening the weekend sat third in the standings and just a single point adrift of dethroning early-season leaders Chesterfield, the one-time Ipswhich boss has really seen his squad come flying out the traps. Once again impressing last weekend as they landed a deserved 2-0 victory against Eastleigh on home soil, Grimsby have now managed to collect 16 points from their opening six Nations League matchups. In fact, now winning each of their last four contests on the bounce, Saturday’s hosts have also gained a reputation for their clinical displays in the final third. Along with putting four past Barnet in a seven-goal thriller earlier in the month, Hurst’s side have bagged themselves 12 goals on their four-match winning run. Last seen on the road picking up a 3-1 win away at Torquay, they should be looking to cash in on a sluggish Maidenhead outfit. Last seen getting hit with a 1-0 defeat away at Notts County, Saturday’s hosts are freefalling their way down the table. Losing each of their last four National League contests on the spin, including back-to-back home defeats, we’re backing an away victory here.
Tip: Grimsby Town win @ 5/4
17:30 Borussia Mönchengladbach vs Borussia Dortmund
Starting with Saturday’s guests, while Dortmund might have been hit with that hugely worrying 2-1 defeat away at Freiburg last month, BVB have bounced back in some style. Knowing that they must try and keep up an early pace with defending champions Bayern Munich, the rural German outfit have managed to find their feet under new boss Marco Rose. Opening up their Champions League adventure with a deserved 2-1 win away at Besiktas, the now-former Gladbach boss saw his side lay down another marker last weekend. Eventually landing themselves a thumping 4-2 win against Union Berlin on home soil, Dortmund have now won each of their last four straight contests across all formats. Marking their return from the international break with an action-packed 4-3 win away at Bayer Leverkusen, Rose’s side have gained a reputation for their free-scoring displays in the final third. Bagging 12 goals on their four-match winning run, it is well worth keeping an eye out for attacking talisman Erling Haaland. Recording another brace against Union Berlin last time out, the Norweigan superstar has already racked himself up 16 goals for club and country since opening the 2021/22 campaign. On the flip side, while BVB might be flying high, the same cannot be said for a downbeat Borussia Mönchengladbach side. Last seen getting hit with a worrying 1-0 loss away at Augsburg, Saturday’s hosts have managed to win just one of their opening five Bundesliga contests. Losing three of their last four contests, including a 4-0 drumming against Bayer Leverkusen last month, Dortmund and their returning boss should be smelling a chance here.
