3 English stars who could potentially replace Mohamed Salah at Liverpool

While Liverpool might open Christmas Day sitting at the top of the Premier League table, there is no doubt that fans around Anfield would have been concerned by Mohamed Salah’s recent comments about his future on Merseyside.

Despite coming off the bench and bagging himself a brace in the Reds’ stunning 7-0 romp away at Crystal Palace over the weekend, the Egyptian ace is rumoured to be eyeing a potential move away from the Premier League.

Salah gave an exclusive interview to Madrid-based newspaper AS at the weekend in which he expressed his admiration for both Real Madrid and Barcelona, fuelling speculation around his long-term future.

Also admitting that he was disappointed to have not been named captain against Midtjylland on Champions League duties, Salah has scored 13 goals in as many Premier League appearances for Liverpool this season.

If Jurgen Klopp is eyeing up a potential replacement for the former PFA Player of the Year, we have taken a look at three English stars who could be on the German’s shortlist.

Jack Grealish

While many might argue that Jack Grealish is far from a like-for-like replacement for Salah at Anfield, there is no doubt that the Aston Villa skipper has gained a string of plaudits after what has been a stellar campaign in the Midlands.

Spearheading a new-look side under Dean Smith that has a European charge at the top of their agenda, the English playmaker has been a standout Premier League performer this season and is reportedly on the radar of a host of European heavyweights.

Expected to be a vital part of Gareth Southgate’s England squad at next year’s delayed European Championships, The Daily Mail reported over the weekend that Villa are expecting bids from both Manchester United and Manchester City.

However, if Salah is to end his three-year stay at Anfield, there is no doubt that Liverpool fans would jump at the chance to bring in one of English football’s hottest prospects.

Grealish is currently enjoying the best season of his career – scoring five goals and laying on six assists already after forming an eye-catching partnership with summer arrival Ollie Watkins.

Jadon Sancho

Although Jadon Sancho was heavily linked with a potential £100million move to Manchester United over the summer, the 20-year-old’s move failed to materialise and the England international instead stayed put with Borussia Dortmund.

However, with the German giants partying ways with Head Coach Lucien Farve earlier in the month, BVB have struggled with their stability this season and Sancho has epitomized their struggles.

Despite still looking to open his Bundesliga account this year, Sancho is still regarded as one of Europe’s standout talents and it has been no secret that the Dortmund ace is open to a Premier League return in the near future.

While many expected the former Manchester City starlet to make the move to Old Trafford earlier in the year, this is not the first time that Liverpool have reportedly taken a look at Sancho.

Speaking to Talk Sport back in August, former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy revealed that the winger’s “preference” was to secure an Afield switch, a claim that was later backed up by one of Sancho’s family members.

Harvey Elliot

After bringing in the likes of Diogo Jota in a £50million deal from Wolves over the summer, Jurgen Klopp could be looking closer to home if he is to find a potential replacement for his Egyptian talisman.

With a real chance to avoid breaking the bank, many around Anfield will undoubtedly be calling on their German boss to hand young starlet Harvey Elliot a chance to prove himself on the Premier League stage.

Already watching the likes of homegrown product Curtis Jones cement his spot as a first-team regular in Liverpool’s midfield, Klopp has not been shy in offering the Reds’ youngsters their chance to impress.

While Elliot might be spending the season out on loan with Championship outfit Blackburn, the former Fulham starlet has gained a string of rave reviews from across the second-tier.

Lauded by one-time Liverpool and England winger Stewart Downing as a “frightening talent” earlier in the week, the 17-year-old is the Rovers’ leading creator this season, with 33 chances created and four assists tallied.
