With the Premier League return fast approaching, Saturday will see teams from across Britain open their new campaigns and look to make an early statement in their opening contests. In what could prove to be an extremely lively day from across the footballing globe, we here at Soccer News have found a handful of helpful tips that can boost your weekend acca:
Saturday 3rd August
BST 15:00 Celtic vs St Johnstone
Starting with Saturday’s hosts, after marching towards yet another Premiership title and enjoying another domestic sweep in Scotland’s top-tier, it is no surprise that Neil Lennon’s side are an overwhelming favorite to reclaim their crown. Coming off the back of an empathic 7-0 aggregate victory over Nõmme Kalju and now within touching distance of securing a Champions League group stage return for later this year, the Hoops are enjoying a three-match winning run across all competitions and have continued to shine over the summer. One man who has continued to catch the eye during Celtic’s pre-season preparations has been the red-hot Ryan Christie. Heavily praised by Lennon during the week and seen to be a key man in Glasgow this season, the 24-year-old bagged a brace against Nõmme Kalju last week and now has three goals in his last two starts for Celtic. Given St. Johnstone’s continued issues over the summer, Christie and co should be looking to make an early statement. Suffering a 2-1 loss away at Championship outfit Forfar Athletic in their final Scottish Cup contest, Tommy Wright’s side lost three of their four Cup appearances and failed to secure a route out of Group B.
Tip: Ryan Christie to score anytime @ 11/5
15:00 Swansea vs Hull City
While many in South Wales would have been disappointed to have seen Graham Potter make the switch to Brighton over the summer, Swansea have really started to shine under new boss Steve Cooper. Coming from behind to pick up a very impressive 2-1 win over Italian Champions League qualifiers Atalanta in their final pre-season appearance, the Whites have won each of their six matches over the summer and they have really started to click in the final third. Although it appears that attacking talisman Oliver McBurnie is inching closer to a move to Sheffield United, Saturday’s hosts have scored 19 goals on their six-match winning run over pre-season and they will open their Championship campaign with some real momentum. While Swansea may have really started to shine under a new boss, Hull are still struggling to adjust to life under former Peterborough boss Grant McCann. Showing more defensive issues in their 2-2 draw against League One outfit Doncaster Rovers earlier in the week, the Tigers have failed to win any of their last three pre-season outings and have conceded a pair of goals in each of those appearances.
Tip: Swansea win @ 21/20
22:00 Atlanta United vs LA Galaxy
Although Atlanta might be coming off the back a close-fought 4-3 loss away at Western title leaders Los Angeles earlier in the week, the mood in Frank de Boer’s camp should be on a high. Once again handed the chance to climb to the top of the East, the defending MLS champions have won each of their last three matches on home soil, including a 5-0 win over Houston earlier in the month. One man who is once again enjoying another stellar MLS run is last year’s Golden Boot winner, Josef Martinez. Once again finding the net against LAFC last week, the 25-year-old has 12 goals in his last eight appearances and sits third in the overall goalscoring charts. Along with continuing to shine in America’s top-tier, Martinez will also be boosted by his recent performances against Saturday’s opposition. With Atlanta bagging six goals in their last two appearances against Galaxy, including a 4-0 win in Georgia last season, it is also worth noting that the Venezuela international has scored in back-to-back matchups against LA and should be extremely confident of extending that run this weekend. Coming off the back of another worrying display in their 4-0 hammering away at Portland last time out, Guillermo Barros Schelotto’s side have lost back-to-back matches on the road, shipping seven goals.
Tip: Josef Martinez to score 2+ goals @ 8/5
