With the race for the Championship title and that lucrative final playoff spot still hanging in the balance, we have found a handful of helpful tips from the final Matchday that can boost your Sunday acca:
Sunday 5th May
BST 12:30 Wigan vs Millwall
Starting with Sunday’s hosts, while many around the DW would have been worried about Wigan’s Championship status entering 2019, Paul Cook’s side are enjoying a bright end to the campaign. Picking up a point against Birmingham last weekend, the Latics are unbeaten in their last four and have lost just a single second-tier matchup since the start of March. Securing another season of Championship football for fans in Greater Manchester, a huge part of Wigan’s survival push has been their continued performances on home soil. Cook’s side are remarkably enjoying a nine-match unbeaten run at the DW, a run that stems all the way back to New Year’s Day. Even more impressive for Sunday’s hosts, the Latics have managed to take points off of Aston Villa, Norwich and Middlesbrough on that unbeaten run. While Wigan may have secured their Championship status in some style, the same cannot be said for a struggling Millwall side. With Rotherham’s defeat last weekend securing their spot in League One next year, Neil Harris’ Lions have just about managed to crawl over the finishing line. Suffering a 2-1 loss at home to Bristol City last time out and failing to win any of their previous six appearances, Millwall have also failed to win any of their last three matches away from the Den. Given Wigan’s very eye-catching record at the DW and their continued performances at the back end of the season, we’re backing Sunday’s hosts to come away with the victory.
Tip: Wigan win @ 23/20
12:30 Brentford vs Preston
While Brentford’s season could best be described as inconsistent, Thomas Frank’s side are enjoying a purple patch at the back end of the campaign. Handed a 1-0 win against an already relegated Bolton in midweek, the Bees have lost just one of their last six Championship matchups and have their sights set on making a playoff push next season. Picking up a very impressive 2-0 win over promotion hopefuls Leeds in their last appearance at Griffin Park, a huge part of Brentford’s late charge for the top half has been their continued performances in Middlesex. Losing just one league match in front of their own supporters in their last 11 appearances, a run that stems back to the 8th of December, Frank has seen his side also score two or more goals in seven of their last nine matches on home soil. One man who has continued to spearhead Brentford’s attack is the highly touted, Neal Maupay. Finding the net against Leeds a fortnight ago, the French U21 international striker has now bagged four in his last five and bagged a very eye-catching 27 goals across all competitions. With 24 of those goals coming in the Championship, the Bees’ leading man sits third in the overall goalscoring charts. With Preston freefalling out of the top half and showing some glaring defensive issues, Maupay should be confident of extending his goalscoring tally. Shipping three against Sheffield Wednesday last weekend and now losing five of their last seven, Alex Neil has also seen his side lose their last three away matches on the bounce. Conceding two or more goals in each of those defeats, including a 2-0 loss at Wigan in their last appearance away from Deepdale, Brentford’s attacking talisman could enjoy another successful afternoon in the final third.
Tip: Neal Maupay to score anytime @ 10/11
12:30 Nottingham Forest vs Bolton
Starting with Sunday’s visitors, after being forced to forfeit last weeks match against Brentford due to the senior players going on strike, it has been nothing short of a woeful campaign for Bolton. With their spot in League One confirmed for next season, Phil Parkinson has now seen his side lose their last six Championship matchups on the bounce and their form in the final third has been a huge concern throughout the year. The Whites have failed to find the net in their last four Championship appearances and have not found the net in over 400 minutes of action. It is also worth noting that Bolton have scored just 29 times in their 45 matches this year, the worst attacking record in the second-tier. While Bolton might be struggling with their form at the back end of the season, Nottingham Forest are enjoying a bright end to their campaign. Picking up a 1-0 win over QPR last weekend, Martin O’Neil’s side have now recorded back-to-back victories. While any chance of a playoff push is off the cards for this year, the Reds have continued to shine at the City Ground. Including a 3-0 victory over playoff contenders Middlesbrough in their last appearance on home soil, Sunday’s hosts have won six of their last eight matches in Nottingham. With Forest showing a newfound defensive resolve and recording back-to-back clean sheets, we’re backing O’Neil’s side to come away with a comfortable victory on Sunday afternoon.
Tip: Nottingham Forest win to nil @ 11/10
