Two sides who find themselves battling it out at the top of the A-League table, Western United will welcome Auckland to Ironbark Fields on Saturday morning.
Starting with the hosts, while Western United might have spent the whole of last season battling it out at the foot of the A-League standings, John Aloisi’s men have come roaring back in a sensational fashion. Getting this weekend’s fixtures underway sat in bronze medal position, the Melbourne-based outfit have continued to gain a string of plaudits. Knowing that they can move within touching distance of the AFC Champions League spots on Friday morning, the one-time Portsmouth striker has seen his squad suffer just a single defeat from any of their previous 10 consecutive A-League appearances. With that run stemming all the way back to a 3-1 loss against local rivals Melbourne Victory on December 1st, Western United have also gained a reputation for their lively outcomes. Playing out respective 2-2 stalemates against Central Coast and Macarthur on either side of opening February, Aloisi’s side have seen five of their previous six A-League showdowns finish with both teams finding the net.
As for the visitors, while Auckland might have only made their A-League debut this season, the Black Knights have continued on a history-making romp. Remarkably opening Friday’s trip to Melbourne holding a two-point buffer at the top of the table, Steve Corica’s side find the mood in their camp at a red-hot high. Last seen collecting an eye-catching 2-1 win against Macarthur, the former Sydney boss has seen his squad muster 10 points from their previous four A-League appearances. Signing off 2024 with a sensational 4-1 victory away at Central Coast, Auckland have also continued to impress with their performances away from the Mount Smart Stadium. In fact, Corica’s men have lost just one of their seven A-League away fixtures so far this season. However, it should be noted, the Black Knights have mustered just a sole clean sheet on their travels since the end of November. Notching eight goals on their four-match unbeaten run, we could be set for another enjoyable contest on Saturday morning.
