Two camps who are desperately seeking a much-needed Premiership boost on Saturday afternoon, Motherwell will welcome Ross County to Fir Park.
Starting with the hosts, while Motherwell might still be clinging onto their spot in the top-half of the Premiership table, the Steelmen find themselves at the heart of a real crisis. Last seen getting February underway with a routine 3-1 defeat at home against Scottish giants Celtic, they also watched Stuart Kettlewell leave the club following a public fallout. Signing off January with a 2-1 loss against St. Johnstone, interim boss Stephen Frail has a major job on his hands at Fir Park. Opening Saturday’s showdown holding just a one-point buffer from slipping out of the play-off places, Motherwell have lost each of their last four appearances across all competitions by an aggregate score of 9-3. In fact, despite claiming a 2-0 victory against Aberdeen last month, that is the only win that the Steelmen have collected from any of their previous 10 outings. With that rut stemming all the way back to a dramatic 4-3 victory against Dundee United on December 14th, it should also be noted that Saturday’s hosts have registered just a sole Premiership clean sheet at Fir Park since the opening weekend.
As for the visitors, once again scrapping it out at the foot of the Premiership table, Ross County are once again fighting to keep hold of their top-flight status. While the Staggies might have enjoyed a much-needed flurry on either side of opening the New Year, Don Cowie’s side have come crashing back down to earth in a worrying fashion. Last seen on February 2nd slumping to a 4-0 drumming at the hands of Rangers, the Dingwall-based outfit have lost three of their previous four appearances across all competitions. Watching their Scottish Cup adventure come to an end last month following an action-packed 3-2 defeat at home against Championship outfit Livingston, Ross County have shown some glaring defensive issues. Including a 4-1 loss against runaway leaders Celtic on January 11th, Cowie’s side have conceded 12 goals on their four-match winless rut. It should also be noted, the Staggies have failed to record a single Premiership clean sheet since a 3-0 win against Dundee FC on Boxing Day.
