Ajax’s Frenkie de Jong has been linked with interest from a umber of clubs around Europe, and the situation has for a while been such that Barcelona have been considered the favorites for his signature. But first their arch-rivals Real Madrid reportedly prepared to go in for the youngster, then it was Manchester United too, and now it seems Manchester City are also set to enter the fray.
That’s at least according to the Mirror, who claim the 21-year-old is an option for Pep Guardiola in January as City lack proper cover for the aging feet of Fernandinho. The Brazilian turned 33 this year and with Benjamin Mendy injured again, midfielder Fabian Delph is currently deputizing at left back.
De Jong seemed Barcelona-bound this summer, but the success of Ajax in making to the Champions League group stages meant he was staying for another season. However, if the reports of the Camp Nou being his own choice destination are true, there will be very little anyone can do about it.
