A-League leaders Brisbane Roar salvaged a point in the dying minutes to draw 1-1 against bottom side North Queensland Fury on Saturday night.

The Fury led from the ninth minute of the match when David Williams fed the ball into the area where Gareth Edds timed his run to perfection and hammered home the goal from point-blank range.

But Brisbane, like so often before this season, lifted their intensity before eventually equalising just five minutes from full-time through Ivan Franjic. In the night’s other match, the Newcastle Jets maintained their recent run of good form with a 1-0 win over the Wellington Phoenix.

Some precise passing in the 55th minute saw Marko Jesic score his third goal of the season to hand all three points to the hosts.

The win moves Newcastle up into seventh place in the A-League standings, while Wellington slips to eighth.

The Jets enjoyed the majority of possession and territory in the first half but weren’t able to capitalise on a number of half-chances.

It took Newcastle until 10 minutes into the second half to break the deadlock, when Ben Kantarovski collected the ball in the middle of the park before finding Ali Abbas on the left flank.

The Iraqi native provided a nice through ball for Jesic who entered the area before firing a curling right-foot shot that skimmed off the far post and into the corner of the net.

Wellington threw everything at the Jets in the final 10 minutes in the hope of salvaging a draw but the Newcastle defence was up to the challenge and managed to shut out the visitors for their third win of the season.
