Shockingly relinquishing their Bundesliga crown last season as they missed out on the chance to get their hands on a 12th consecutive domestic title, Bayern Munich endured a public struggle.

Eventually forced to settle for a bronze medal finish among Germany’s elite, the now-former champions face what is a critical summer behind the scenes in Munich.

Parting ways with Thomas Tuchel after the ex-Chelsea boss could only muster a single full campaign at the Allianz, many across the continent were left stunned as Vincent Kompany was officially appointed as Tuchel’s successor on May 29th.

Guiding Burnley to an immediate Championship return last season as the Clarets failed to keep hold of their Premier League status, the former Manchester City skipper will be under a huge amount of scrutiny in Munich.

With plenty of pressure on their shoulders this time around, we have taken a look at the key questions looming over Kompany ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.

Getting Kane over more summer heartbreak

While there might have been plenty of eyebrows raised last summer as Bayer splashed out £100million on Harry Kane, the former Tottenham talisman certainly repaid that lofty fee as he broke a string of long-standing records at the Allianz.

Although Kane might have stormed his way to Germany’s Golden Boot last season as the England skipper notched 36 goals in his 32 Bundesliga appearances, there are questions over just how much of a phycological blow he suffered over the summer.

Despite notching three EURO 24 goals as the Three Lions eventually fell to a 2-1 defeat in last weekend’s final from Berlin, the 30-year-old was miles away from his tantalising best and fingers have been pointed in Kane’s direction.

Dragged off by Gareth Southgate on the hour mark on Sunday night after failing to make any kind of impact in the German capital, there have been plenty of speculation over Kane’s fitness.

While England’s all-time record goalscorer might have averaged a Bundesliga goal every 79 minutes last season, there are concerns that the ex-Spurs superstar is starting to lose his powers.

Must keep Musiala at all costs

While Kane might have embarked on a record-breaking romp since arriving from Spurs last summer, it was certainly Bayern’s budding young superstar which stole all of the headlines around the Allianz.

Although Bayer Leverkusen ace and fellow Germany international Florian Wirtz might have been crowned as the Bundesliga Player of the Season, Jamal Musiala further cemented his status as a future Ballon d’Or winner.

Recording 16 Bundesliga goal contributions last season and blossoming into one of Europe’s potential new poser boys, the 21-year-old is also becoming the new face of Bayern and their new era under Kompany.

However, notching a trio of European Championship strikes with Germany this summer, it appears that the former Chelsea academy star has a host of heavyweight admirers from across the continent.

With continued speculation that the likes of Manchester City are weighing up what would be a sensational summer swoop, Kompany’s number one priority must be keeping hold of their playmaking sensation ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.

Kompany must find some defensive resolve

While Bayern Munich and their superstar attack might have continued to show their usual clinical edge last season, Tuchel was vocal about his side’s glaring defensive struggles.

With it expected that Dutch defender Matthijs de Ligt will complete a move to Premier League giants Manchester United this summer, Tuchel drastically struggled to find a regular defensive unit at the Allianz.

Signing off their Bundesliga nightmare on May 18th with an action-packed 4-2 defeat at the hands of Hoffenheim, Bayern were desperately seeking some steel at the back on both the domestic and European stage.

Watching Burnley show their own glaring defensive issues last season as they suffered an immediate Championship return, there are plenty of questions over if Kompany can turnaround Bayern’s leaky backline.

Crashing out of the Champions League following a 4-3 aggregate defeat against eventual winners Real Madrid, the Bavarians mustered just a pair of clean sheets from any of their final 16 Bundesliga appearances.
