Scottish Premier League strugglers Aberdeen got rid of manager Mark McGhee on Wednesday as the former Dons striker paid the price for the club’s recent run of poor results.

The 53-year-old was recently given a vote of confidence by the Aberdeen board but now McGhee and his assistants, Scott Leitch and Colin Meldrum, have all left Pittodrie with the Dons second bottom of the table.

Aberdeen chairman Stewart Milne said: “On behalf of everyone at the club, I would like to thank Mark, Scott and Colin for their time at Aberdeen.

“It goes without saying that everyone at Aberdeen Football Club wishes Mark, Scott and Colin every success in the future.”

Aberdeen have lost their last six SPL games, including the 9-0 hammering by Celtic last month – a club record defeat.

The Dons were set to face Celtic again on Saturday, before all SPL games were postponed as a result of the cold snap that has hit Scotland.
