Abidal nears Monaco switch

French daily L’Equipe has learned that Monaco have reignited their interest in free agent Eric Abidal.

The veteran defender had been widely tipped to join the newly promoted side, but the deal seemed to have fallen through few days ago when Abidal’s agent slammed the French club officials for the unprofessional behaviour.

Nevertheless, L’Equipe understands that the move is now back on, with the Frenchman expected to put pen to paper early next week.

It still remains to be seen if the two sides can agree on the length of the contract, seeing as how Abidal wants a two-year deal, while Monaco are only prepared to offer a one-year contract with an option for another year.

Eric Abidal, 33, has spent last six years at Barcelona, making a total of 125 La Liga appearances for the Catalans.

The Frenchman was allowed to leave Camp Nou when his contract expired in June, and he did not hide his disappointment with the club’s decision.
