Barcelona defender Eric Abidal has undergone successful surgery to remove a liver tumour.
Abidal, 31, was diagnosed with a tumour on his liver on Tuesday but was rushed into surgery at the earliest possible opportunity.
The French defender was operated on by Dr Josep Fuster Obregon in Barcelona, and after the success of the operation, he could be allowed to leave hospital next week at the earliest.
“During the operation, which lasted for approximately three hours, the medical team removed the tumour through laparoscopic surgery without any complications,” a statement on the Barcelona website said.
“Depending on his progress, the player could be allowed to leave hospital within a week.”
“By the express desire of the player, the club ask for the maximum respect for his right to privacy and confidentiality.”
Abidal has been a Barcelona regular this season, making 22 La Liga appearances.
