In a huge Serie A clash that seemed to fly under the radar last night, old rivals AC Milan and Juventus battled it out for the right to gain control in the ongoing title race in Italian football’s top division. In the end, after a hard-fought battle, it was the Old Lady who managed to walk away with a vital 3-1 win from the San Siro.

The Chiesa effect

He may not have always been viewed as the answer to Juventus’ problems, but Federicio Chiesa is well and truly proving his worth right now in Juventus’ first team. In addition to scoring the two goals that gave Juve the edge in this game, Chiesa has also been able to bag four goals in his last five games. Everyone knew he was a handy player but he’s going above and beyond that title, to the point where he is the main driving force behind this title resurgence.

Milan’s reality check

Without talisman Zlatan Ibrahimovic it was always going to be tough for AC Milan to win this game, but they were still the favourites and probably should’ve put up more of a fight than they did. Thankfully for their supporters they still reside at the top of the Serie A table courtesy of rivals Inter Milan losing to Sampdoria, and that should be a big wake up call for them. This league is relentless and if they aren’t careful they could wind up slipping out of contention.

Juve still in the hunt?

At this moment in time, Juventus are still priced at 2/1 with 888sport to win the Serie A championship for the tenth year running – placing them as second favourites behind Inter Milan and ahead of AC Milan. That doesn’t mean fans should get too carried away because one win isn’t enough of an indication that they’re going to go all the way, but they do possess a game in hand that could bring them to within four points of the leaders. The potential legacy of winning 10 straight titles could be massive, but just like Celtic in the Scottish Premier League, there’s still plenty of work left to be done.
