Dutch coach Dick Advocaat will take over the Belgian national side on October 1, three months earlier than planned, the Belgian football federation (URBSFA) announced on Thursday.

Advocaat, sacked by Zenit St Petersburg in August, was due to take charge on January 1, 2010, but the resignation of caretaker coach Franky Vercauteren, which followed Belgium’s World Cup qualifying defeat to Armenia, led to a change of plan.

Belgium now have no chance of making the World Cup finals.

Advocaat’s first game will be here against Turkey on October 10.
