Voetbal International understands that Dutch midfielder Ibrahim Afellay is set to leave Barcelona in the upcoming transfer window.
Despite arriving at Camp Nou as one of Europe’s most talented footballers, the Netherlands international never quite managed to prove his worth in Spain, mostly due to numerous injuries.
The highly rated footballer looks set to leave the Catalans this summer, but his agent has all but ruled out a return to Dutch Eredivisie.
“This is not the right time. Ibrahim is still a young player and he has a lot to prove abroad,” agent Rob Jansen was quoted as saying in Voetbal International.
“Last week I was at the table with FC Barcelona (officials) and the club is willing to work on a solution.”
Even though Afellay has another year left on his contract, it is believed the Catalans are prepared to let him leave for a nominal fee.
The Dutch newspaper has suggested that clubs from La Liga as well as Lazio and Inter Milan are showing interest in the 28-year-old footballer.
Afellay has managed just 21 league appearances for Barcelona since joining from PSV Eindhoven, while also enjoying a six-month loan spell at Schalke.
