Premier League giants Liverpool are hot on the trail of Benfica youngster Francisco Reis Ferreira, according to the player’s official representative.
The 20-year-old is the captain of the Eagles reserve team that compete in Portugal’s second tier, and he is also a regular in the Under-21 national team.
Despite the fact that he has yet to be handed his senior debut, Ferro already has quite a few admirers from abroad, and Liverpool even made an official approach.
The defender’s agent has moved to confirm an interest from Anfield, but revealed the decision was made for the centre-back to stay put.
“I cannot deny that Liverpool were one of the clubs that approached me, and all of us, Benfica, Ferro and myself, decided that was not the moment (to leave),” agent Ulisses Santos told Renascenca.
Used mostly in the heart of defence, but also capable of operating on either flank, Ferro has been a commanding presence at the back for Benfica II, and he is widely expected to be promoted to the senior squad by the end of the season.
