Sergio Aguero is set to miss Argentina’s World Cup qualifiers against Chile and Venezuela after failing to recover from injury.
Aguero, 23, was substituted in Manchester City’s 4-0 English Premier League victory over Blackburn Rovers last Saturday after picking up a groin problem.
The striker had declared via his Twitter account that he was still due to meet up with the Argentina national team on Monday, but has been told he is very unlikely to take any part in the qualifying matches.
“I am almost ruled out,” Aguero said, according to Spanish news agency EFE.
“The doctors say this is a very tricky injury.”
“I am sorry that this is happening in this good moment I am going through at Manchester City, I was hopeful of at least getting to play the Venezuela match, but the doctors have told me they will not take risks.”
Aguero has been in good form since his arrival at Manchester City, scoring eight Premier League goals.
It is unclear whether the striker will be available for the City’s match at home to Aston Villa on October 15, or the Champions League tie with Villarreal three days later.
Argentina open their 2014 World Cup qualifying campaign at home to Chile on Friday, before facing Venezuela away fours day later.
