Atletico Madrid Javier Aguirre promised changes for the Champions League match against Liverpool on Wednesday from the team that lost to city rivals Real at the weekend.
The team “needs freshening up and some players need to play”, said Aguirre, who according to Spanish media could be fired if the team perform badly in the Group D match.
Atletico “is a team with players who are at about the same level, the idea is to play those who have not played much recently and to share the time on the field,” said the Mexican.
He will not be able to count on French keeper Gregory Coupet, who has thigh injury.
But he has not revealed if the club's overworked star striker, Argentine Sergio Aguero, will be in the starting lineup.
“If (Aguero) plays the full 90 minutes, he could have a physical problem,” he said.
Atletico are having a difficult time with a 6-1 thrashing by Barcelona followed up by a painful 2-1 derby defeat to Real Madrid on Saturday.
