Portuguese newspaper Record claims that Benfica playmaker Pablo Aimar is edging closer to joining Al Ahli.

The veteran midfielder, who has less than six months left on his deal at Estadio da Luz, was tipped to remain with the Eagles at least until the summer, but it appears that he will be leaving in January after all.

According to Record, Aimar has received a lucrative proposal from Al Ahli and is on the verge of reaching an agreement with the Dubai-based club.

Al Ahli recently produced a major coup by signing Ricardo Quaresma on a free transfer from Besiktas, with Pablo Aimar likely to follow.

With the club only allowed three foreign players, two of Luis Jimenez, Grafite and Achille Emana will be leaving in case the Argentine arrives in Dubai.

Pablo Aimar, 33, has spent last five seasons at Benfica, scoring 12 goals in 99 Primeira Liga appearances for the club.
