Looking to build off of their stellar campaign last season, a resurgent Ajax will welcome Premier League outfit Watford to Amsterdam on Thursday evening.

Starting with the hosts, although Ajax were undoubtedly left heartbroken by their Champions League semi-final exit back in May, Erik ten Hag’s side gained plenty of plaudits for what was a very eye-catching campaign. Reclaiming their Eredivisie title for the first time in four years and also capturing the KNVB Beker in empathic fashion, a huge part of Ajax’s continued rise last season was their form in the final third. Once again bagging a pair of goals in their 2-1 win over Turkish title contenders İstanbul Başakşehir last weekend, I Lancieri registered an incredible 119 league goals last season, the best return of any side across Europe’s top-tiers.

As for the visitors, although Watford’s eye-catching start to the campaign may have had many around Vicarage Road dreaming of a European return, Javi Garcia’s side could only crawl over the finish line. Suffering a 6-0 hammering against Manchester City in their FA Cup final clash back in May, the Hornets lost each of their last four matches last year and eventually had to settle for a bottom half finish in the Premier League table. While Ajax may have seen the likes of Frankie de Jong and Matthijs de Ligt secure a move away over the summer, we’re backing the Dutch giants to come away with the victory in Amsterdam on Thursday evening.
