Ajax have agreed a deal to sign Edson Omar Alvarez from Mexican side Club America, according to Sky Sports.
The young defender, primarily a centre-back but also capable of performing well at right-back or as a defensive midfielder, has spent his entire career so far at Club America, accumulating 113 appearances in their shirt in all competitions and scoring once. He also has a goal in 28 games as a Mexico international.
Ajax have just parted ways with Matthijs de Ligt, after a long chase for his signature which featured, apart from the eventual winners Juventus, the likes of Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich. The Dutch champions earned over €70 million in the deal but have been left with a huge hole to fill at the back.
Only 2 years older than de Ligt, Alvarez is perhaps not as much in demand as the Dutchman, but his versatility offers another dimension which will surely come in very handy for the Eredivisie champions.
The deal between the two clubs is, however, still subject to a medical and a few other conditions.
