Eredivisie giants Ajax Amsterdam have confirmed they are interested in signing Barcelona defender Marc Muniesa.
The Amsterdammers are actively searching for a new central defender after Jan Vertonghen was sold to Tottenham.
The Dutch giants believe Barcelona B defender Marc Muniesa would be a perfect replacement for the Belgian international and they are hoping to sign the player on loan this summer.
New Ajax sporting director Marc Overmars explains that the player could soon be loaned to the Eredivisie club.
“FC Barcelona are set to meet with the player on Tuesday to discuss the contract extension,” Overmars told De Telegraaf.
“Once that is settled, the move to Ajax is negotiable. We want to loan Muniesa for a year.”
The 20-year-old has largely impressed playing for Barcelona B and he was handed a first team debut in the 4-0 win over Getafe in April 2012.
Muniesa is capable of covering a number of positions in defence and midfield, but Ajax boss Frank do Boer sees him as left-back or left centre-back.
“He has played a lot of matches in Segunda Division. I have seen him on DVDs. He has a good left foot and is a true Ajax player.
”I do not see him as a defensive midfielder. But he would be a great option for a left-back or left stopper, if other options prove unfeasible.”
Muniesa has scored a total of 3 goals in 49 games for Barcelona B in Segunda Division.
