Ajax defended their third place in the Dutch Eredivisie with a 5-1 crushing of arch rivals Feyenoord in Sunday’s Classic.

The home side were the better team throughout the game and went ahead on 42 minutes as Demy de Zeeuw picked up a pass from Marko Pantelic and used all of his strength to beat a defender and goalkeeper Rob van Dijk for 1-0.

Feyenoord received another blow in the next minute, as Stefan Babovic’ clash with Jan Vertonghen earned the Serbian a direct red card.

A strike from Urby Emanuelson practically decided the match two minutes after the break, and and Gregory van der wiel beat the keeper shortly before the hour to make it 3-0.

Denny Landzaat pulled one back for Feyenoord in the 74th minute, but a Demy de Zeeuw strike restored the original gap eight minutes later.

In added time, Ajax were handed a penalty as Van Dijk fouled Luis Suarez in the area. Van Dijk was sent off for the offense, and substitute keeper Erwin Mulder didn’t manage to stop Suarez’ spot kick, 5-1.
