Ajax defender Jan Vertonghen has confirmed that he is looking to leave the Amsterdammers, speaking after the Cup exit from AZ Alkmaar.
The versatile defender started his career at Amsterdam ArenA, and is looking for a new challenge after six seasons in the first team.
Vertonghen’s contract with Ajax is set to expire in June 2013, and he is not interested in signing a new deal.
“It was quickly clear that I didn’t wish to accept the offer they had made. Then, one doesn’t see many opportunities to grow together,” the Belgian defender told regional TV station AT5.
The player admits he has already come to terms with leaving the club and he expects to join a big European club.
“I think that I can make a nice transfer in the future. I spoke to the club a while ago, but that was soon over. Ajax might find it good that I am leaving.”
The 24-year-old is regarded as a cultured central defender who can also play at left-back and in the centre of the park.
He was recently linked with a switch to Arsenal, although there has been no concrete offer.
Vertonghen has so far amassed 151 league appearances for Ajax, and scored 21 goals.
