Ajax have been dealt a blow with news striker Kolbeinn Sigthorsson could be missing for the rest of the season.
The Iceland international fractured his ankle in the 1-0 Eredivisie loss against Groningen in October 2011, and has been out of action ever since.
Ajax were initially hopeful the 21-year-old would be match fit again shortly after the winter break, but they now fear that Sigthorsson’s season has already come to an end.
“I hope that he still has a role to play in the decisive stages of the season. However, it looks as if he will have to focus on next term, and make sure he’s fully recovered by then,” Ajax coach Frank de Boer told De Telegraaf.
“He wasn’t fully match fit when he returned from the Under-21 European Championship last summer.”
“He was being plagued by groin problems, and used pain killers in several games. His lengthy absence now is a result of all that.”
Sigthorsson has scored five goals in eight Eredivisie appearances for Ajax this season.
