David Alaba is in the final year of his contract at Bayer Munich and the talks with the club about a new one have been scrapped. Bayern have withdrawn their offer and there is now nothing on the table for him to sign.
While this development represented a strong statement from the Bundesliga champions, making it perfectly clear that they wouldn’t be held to ransom by any player regardless of his name or past contributions, it has also reportedly put several top clubs on alert. Manchester City and Liverpool are both interested in bringing the defender to the Premier League; City need a left-back and Liverpool have been thin in the centre-back department after the season-ending injury to Virgil van Dijk, and Alaba is known as a top player who plays in both these positions.
Both Premier League clubs were considering a January move for some fee rather than waiting to sign the 28-year-old on a free transfer in the summer, but Sky Sports claim they’ve been told by a source close to the player that he intends to play the whole season for Bayern.
Inter Milan, Real Madrid, PSG and Juventus are also reportedly interested.
