Alan Hutton has urged Celtic striker Leigh Griffiths to work hard to get back to his best.
Griffiths is one of the best players in the current Celtic squad, but the Scotland international has been courting controversy.
The former Wolverhampton Wanderers striker was not part of the Hoops’ pre-season trip to France due to being overweight.
The 30-year-old striker is on the sidelines at the moment with a calf injury and has yet to feature in a match day squad for Neil Lennon’s side.
Former Rangers defender Hutton has said that he is disappointed at Griffiths’s current situation, and has urged him to step up.
When asked if he was starting to worry about Griffiths’s future at Parkhead, Hutton told Football Insider: “Yeah, a little bit. Obviously you know how highly I rate him, I think he’s a top-class player but he really needs to knuckle down.
“He must have been sitting at home thinking: ‘Ugh, they’ve brought Ajeti in and he’s scored (v Dundee United).’ In the nicest of ways, he obviously doesn’t want to see him fail but from his own personal point of view, that’s who he’s up against.
“For him to come in and score, it kind of knocks Griffiths down a little bit. The manager’s thinking the new signing’s come in and done well, so it’s a difficult period for him.
“The only thing he can do now is work doubly as hard, really knuckle down and show the manager he’s ready to fight for his place because on his day he’s probably one of the top strikers in Scotland. He’s going to have to get back to that if he wants to get back in the plans.”
Stepping up
Griffiths is a very good striker, but things are not working out for him at the moment.
The 30-year-old needs to step up his game in the coming weeks and months, as Celtic will need him in their team.
The Glasgow giants are aiming to make it 10 Scottish Premiership titles in a row this season, and are rated at 4/7 favourites by Betfair to do so.
