Toby Alderweireld has added fuel to speculations linking him with a summer switch to Anfield by admitting Liverpool was his preferred destination.
The highly-rated defender is set to leave Ajax at the end of the current campaign and has recently been linked with a number of high-profile sides.
Just as Liverpool are reportedly readying an £8 million bid for his services, the Belgian has made it clear that he would like to join the Reds in the summer.
“Usually I do not want to play for an English club that’s in mid-table,” Alderweireld said to Het Laatste Nieuws. “But, unlike Newcastle, Liverpool meet my criteria.”
It is unlikely Liverpool fans will be too happy about the player branding the Reds a mid table club, but the odds are they will be getting an excellent defender.
Brendan Rodgers is eager to sign a long-term replacement for club icon Jamie Carragher, especially since both Martin Skrtel and Sebastian Coates could be leaving as well.
It appears as though the Reds have chosen Alderweireld as their number one target and all that’s left is for the two clubs to agree on the transfer fee.
